I ran across something new to me here today, posting someone else's wallpaper, unaltered, from another site with permission. My question is..Why? The explanation was that the uploader liked the wallpaper and wanted to share it with the community. Certainly many many walls are used here in Bootskins, Logons, and Screenshots with and without permission because people like them. But to post an unaltered wallpaper created by someone else that is posted at another site, with permission from the original creator, could open a floodgate and turn Wincustomize into another "Free Wallpapers, get 'em now" site. There are hundreds of wallpapers that I and everyone else love at sites all over the Internet, but to get permission and post them here would be a mess. It seems like a very bad idea to let something like this continue.

You know I agree with you, made several comments and even got accused of being "hot under the collar."

I made a joke on IRC about the whole thing...said I should go get a bunch of photos from sxc.hu, plaster "Vista" on them, upload them here and watch the download count soar. *sigh*

Im sorry but to me this seems beyond ridiculous.. The Wallpaper section is hard enough to get work accepted into for people that legitimately create *Original* walls..And yet there are people posting work to the gallery that are not even the original authors??

Excuse me??..

To use a wall in a Logon, Bootskin, to compliment a WB...sure, sure, sure..
But to DL it from another sites library and upload straight into WC's..with permission????

The salient point is 'with permission'.

Certainly it would be 'ideal' to have the author post it/them here him/herself....but there may be reasons that is not practicable [to them] so, if there's specific permission to redistribute elsewhere publicly then there is no legal, legitimate reason to deny them.

Copyright belongs to the author.  If that author so determines their future re distribution then it is no-one else's call to determine to the contrary.

To anyone wanting to actively protect his/her property it certainly seems nonsensical to allow such dissemination simply because it is subsequently difficult at best to restore any direct future control/restrictions...

Ok....I saw this cool WB at dA, the author hasn't submitted it here...was going to ask them about doing it but hey, if I can get permission and upload it myself, coolies for me!

funny...just the other day i saw a screenshot with a wallpaper of mine that the user had recolored...i really liked the way it turned out and I asked them if they wanted to release the recolored version with my permission...to me, it's no big deal! if its a big deal to someone,just dont give them permission....

Really dont intend any "disrespect" Skinhit.. But the "Permission" given/not isnt really the main issue here...

It was a point made by Jafo,and made *well, but really not what or why Boss began this thread...

The point is, why use Wincustomize's bandwith to host wallpapers from other sites by people that don't even know what a Wincustomize is?

If you want to email them and tell them about WC and have a look and see if they want to post here, fine.

But I just don't see the point of getting premission and posting somebody else's work here. "Contributing to the community" doesn't work in this case for me somehow.

well that's not quite true...all it takes is a fairly average graphics proggy and one click on a hue-shift.

Perhaps that rule should be re-evaluated ?

Hypothetically that rule allows me or anyone else to get permission from artists/authors that have been banned/exiled/removed and or just plain old 'hit the road' from WC and re-uploading their skins here.

And what would be the harm?  It's rare that artwork submitted is the cause of the banning. (And if you were to post material that justified banning . . you would be out too.)

While I would rather the original artist post their own work, I've no issue with someone else promoting other's work (with permissions).  At a minimum I'd like to see a link to the original authors work, but it's not necessary.

More rules do not always help the community.  Sometimes the community needs to loosen up a bit. 

If the original artist is cool with the situation, who are we to question?

I'm sorry folks for creating this mess with the " Wall " i posted
it was never my intention for a fight to break out over it .
Just a simple wall with permission attached that I thought all would
like. With 650 downloads in one day i guessed right !

This wall did NOT go up overnight - there were e-mails back and forth
between Zoomba and myself as he gathered detailed info - so as to make
the right decision ( according to the Rules ) - then it got posted - for 1 day !
and then pulled back into moderation once again.

It seems there would be a select few who think the rules don't apply to them.
and that their voice is all that should matter and if that doesn't work - then
by all means , change the rules to fit .

The Mods gota have a tuff job sorting thru all this stuff - and some of it has
to fall in the " Gray area " i'm sure making for tuff decisions to be made,
but they are the Mods and that's their job - and ALL decisions then should
be FINAL !!! the END -they except or rejct based on ALL the info the have gathered
We are not privy to that info - to be the Judges

It's the rules that help make this site what it is and why you hear the word " Family "
tossed around freely - what other site talks about it's family ??

I could of posted that Wall at a 100 other sites - with no permission - and it
would have been accepted , i'll bets'ya ..... but I didn't and haven't .. 'cause

This is the " Family " I wanted to share it with ...

I know I could just " Delete " and make this go away .. so could they ( WC )
but the same problem would just return again sooner or later .. So I'll wait for a final Decision and live by it .............. THE END ......

PS ... through e-mail I did invite the artist to
come and check out this site and maybe become a member
if he has something more to share and or the time ....
and of course I told him if he does come on board with
us , that I would delete his photo so he could post it..
I haven't heard back from him though ... and Mike ...( Zoomba ) was given his e-mail address so all this could be verified -

Perhaps , but I never mentioned anything about " Banned Artwork" that was tossed in as an extra...

But I guess we have the answer etched in stone now - Anything goes as long as you have that little permission note enclosed.

If someone was banned for posting inappropriate material and you reposted it with permission, you would be banned.
If you posted someone's material (with their permission) it would be accepted (as long as it met the other WC guidelines).

Over the years other people have pulled their skins or asked that their skins be removed.  It would be unlikely that they would ask someone or grant permission for someone else to post their work here. 

Again, I would rather see original artists post original work.  The system allows and has always allowed for other works to be posted with permission.  Some may take this "letter of the law" and use it to stretch the spirit and that's ok too.

In the end, we get more art here, right?

What would be a better answer?

There is no difference between what is being discussed and someone porting a msstyle to windowblind except a few more clicks.

Soooo What if someone is getting downloads? Big frikkin to do. If they take credit for making it, hang em.

We'll never know because I would never upload others' material for the sake of garnering 'download' counts. Which just seems the case when you upload Art from other sites.

Then there will always be the question of 'is the permission' real ?
How many times has it turned out that there was no permission at all. People lie.

I have taken the time to check on occasion when I have seen Artwork posted here that I knew I already had..and it turned out that the original artist didn't even know their work was here.

But, these are the rules so be it.
