pirates?

I just finished my first game under beginner mode and I thought it was really lame when pirates entered the galaxy about 10 years into the game. They were extremely powerful and destroyed all my ships & starbases, but they wouldn't attack my planets? Eventually they put the Drengin out of commission and I formed an alliance with the other 2 races left standing and won easily.

Why does the game throw put such impossible enemies at you, the pirates' fleets had attack around 80 while my fleets were at around 20. It really didn't make any sense that I had won, I'm sure there was nothing I could do because whenever I built a ship they would kill it.

Its common for they to show up, and they are always strong than you are.

Usually people pull back and increase their technology. That way they can launch ships that have the same level of power. That way you´re able to win back the space.

Anyway, probabily the pirates apeared because the game was being too slow or easy. Usually they turn up when it has been peacefull for too long.

What were you doing with ships with 20 attack in 2235?

[EDIT:] I just noticed it was your first map, sorry.

If you are new to the game, it's probably a good idea to play with mega events (such as this) turned off for a while. It's an option in the game creation screens. Mega events are intended to be quite strong so as to disrupt 'uneventful' games, etc, and they can be problematic for players still getting the hang of things.

That's a mega event. If you're a new player you should probably turn those off.

How can I get my logistics high enough to go toe-to-toe with pirates? I researched the whole tech tree and still couldn't stack that many ships!

Get yourself a good enough ship and you don't need to. Keep in mind that the pirate ships are limited, sooner or later they'll run out. You can always build more of yours, so all you need to do is keep wittling them down. Even if it takes three of your ships to take out two of theirs, you'll eventually clear them out. You just need to design the right ship to start winning a few battles here and there.

I think those should probably be off by default. New players don't think to turn them off when they begin play, and lots of people associate the word mega with cool.

I don't think the pirate event is overpowered, although whenever it occurs I have to repeat the same old boring routine of selling off all my ships and starbases. (Might as well get cash for them if they're going to die anyway).

Perhaps the pirates should be tweaked to only attack ships in space, and not assault planets. Then at least it would be less easy to exploit, as you can't win by conquering all your opponents through fast transports.
