But...I don't want war!

So I'm playing a fun game of DA, the Yor stab me in the back, but after a short war I'm getting the upper hand although there's a good deal of mopping up to be done. While I've been fighting the Yor, the Dregin and Thalians have built huge fleets and have about 5 times my military rating. Better try and make them friendly with me in case they feel like joining in!

I open diplomacy with the Thalians and strangely I see 2 "Declare war" buttons in the treatys section. I thought it might just be a display bug, so I tried clicking on them to see if one would vanish or if they'd go onto the table. This should not have caused me to declare war since I did not hit the send button, but it jumped right to the declare war vote screen so now I'm screwed. I also had items on the table on the right hand side, normally if you have stuff on the table the declare button vanishes.

Has anyone seen a bug like this before? I loaded an old save (too far back for me to want to play from there again, sadly) and tried to recreate it but the diplo screen behaved there.

Is there any way to cheat or edit a save to make peace? It's possible I could win a war again the Thalians, but I'd lose all the starbases in the sectors near them and likely the planets for a while too while the other races pull further and further ahead, and I really can't be bothered when it was caused by a bug.

Perhaps you should set your autosave to a lower number of turns. I have mine set to 5 turns, so there is always a fairly recent save.

Better get the latest DA patch if you dont have it already too. It might fix the bug.

I've accidentally started a war just like you did, (I havent seen the doubling up of buttons though)I had the autosave off at the time. Maybe a confirm would be nice as war is definitely a major pain in the ass. Especially if you were getting on well beforehand.
It has never happened again though. cause I got into real trouble and this weakened me so badly I got killed off in the end.
I never play without autosave set low (I use 10 turns) like moosetek now.

I have autosave set to every other turn - why not, game saves nearly instantly on my machine - and might bump it up to every turn - not to cheese and redo mistakes, but because I've had a few lockups returning from alt+tabbing and a few CTDs, and it's really annoying to replay long turns due to game crashes.

Anyways, heh, maybe before randomly experimenting on buttons you might save, just in case.

Yep. A quick CTRL + S, before any "unknowns" has saved me from more than a few tight spots, and i have my autosave set to every turn. It doesn't take any time to save at all really and saves your ass if you get lots of CTD's.

I have seen a similar bug once, in the original build. I was tech trading with the Yor and as soon as i selected my tech to put on the table, he took it and that was the end of that. Not seen it in the update, so maybe it was addressed.

That happened to me too, I lost a few turns having to load up an old game save

I'm a victim of that too, thereafter I used autosave every turn. I pressed on declare war as if to use it as a threat, I wanted to trade a tech or else I would go to war. Once I found out that I went to war with them, I quickly tried to make peace but a message came saying " due to recent hostilities, the arceans dun want to talk ". But I remember one startrek episode where Picard declared war and the opposing race quickly changed their mind into negotiating? As long as you pay a big price for it, we should be able to quickly make peace???

I normally do, but I wasn't playing on my regular PC as I was away from home. I'd just installed DA on it and transferred my savegame so it was on the default 12 turns and it just so happened to be on the 10th or 11th turn after the same. Since I was at the height of the colonisation phase on a huge map and fighting a war they were busy turns too!

Picard55, got latest patch already

Vogar - Yeah, I really should have quick saved before. In my defence I'm used to autosave being more regular and I "knew" it was safe since it wouldn't declare war without hitting send.

Anyway, done some searching myself, seems there's no peace cheat, best I can do is ctrl w to make the Thalians surrender to me, but that makes me gamebreakingly overpowered, so that's out. Nor is there a savegame editor, and the saves themselves aren't anything I can figure out how to edit. Oh well.
