Strange start locations (Dark Avatar)

I've had a couple of games now where I would start out in one corner of the map, with no planet system in sight. Along with me would be one or more other races. One time I had at least 6 races all starting out on the very same square, along with all thier ships.

Are you running the latest version? I believe there was an issue in the past where not enough stars were generated in some cases, so some races end up 'orphaned' in the corner. It was addressed in 1.5X though IIRC.

No, that was in the unpatched version. But there was no mention of this fix in the change log so I didn't realize it had been addressed.
