Don't make this mistake

I am a DL veteran and have been playing DA since it was first available, slowly using as opponents, the custom races I have won a game with. I only play gigantic, all abundent, max # minor and major races, max difficulty -- very long games, lots of fun... until I managed to create a game crash. Let me explain.

I like very much for each race to using a different ship style (who wants an opponent with the same ship?) Each of the races I have created uses the same ship design as the race with the matching super ability (easier to keep track.) The game I just managed to crash was the first in which I attempted to create new ship designs (no artist I.) The ship style I choose in the setup was unfortunately a style also being used by another of the races in the game. Rather stupidly, I began deleting the existing ship designs, thinking that the designs were individual to each race, rather that a list that all the races using that design set draws from.

Long story short... after three days of play, I managed to delete a ship design that an opponent has already built. The enemy ships became "invisible" because they were missing the design file and when I entered a combat against a fleet of these invisible ships, the game gave me the finger.

The moral...

Always use the obsolete button and never the delete button while futzing around in the shipyard.

A request… Does anyone know how I can fix the problem so that I might continue the game?

A caveat… I could be totally cracked in interpretation of what happened so if someone knows in fact that the game works differently, please correct me.

I wonder if you saved a new ship with the name of the one you deleted (same style and such) and then reloaded if it would work. Thus, make a quick game and make a ship of that design and save it again. Or perhaps if the ship designs are saved as a file you can copy another one into the spot. I think you'd be better off if you can remember the design and make it again and save it. reloading should call that file.

just my thoughts

I've been playing around with shipsets I downloaded from the library recently. With pubmaster's ships several of them are invisible. Also, I didn't realize before-hand the game seems to take a snapshot of your ships so if you manually copy and paste ships into the ship folder mid-game the new ships won't show up.

So, my post probably doesn't help... just thought I'd throw that out in case it has any relevance for you.

I agree with jpinard, when you change anything about ships outside of the game, you have to start a new game to see the effect.

I think I may have muddled my original post. I was only using the existing functions within the shipyard. I did not change anything outside the confines of the game interface.

I did not want to look at the long list of ship designs for the design type I selected during setup, so I deleted them instead of making them obsolete. Because another race was using the same design set I was, when I deleted designs that were already in use, the ships when invisible on the galactic map and the game crashed when it attempted to load those ships into a combat.

I deleted them instead of making them obsolete

Oops.

jpinard,

You are still having problems with my ships? Are you in the metaverse or playing with KSHM turned on?

I dropped them in the normal (non-Meta) ships folder. All of them except the carriers I think were OK. I'm not playing with KSHM. I tried resvaing out as a template would compensate for no KSHM... but I guess not?

Have you tried going back to a previous autosave?

did you try temporarily turning down hardware acceleration?
