The Artificial Planets Mod

Taken from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxya mod, this mod adds a new class of Starbase: Artificial Planets!

Starbases and artificial planets now have to be researched, so you can't build them straight away.

The mod can either be downloaded from the Library or from the TBS Modder Mod DB.

Enjoy!

what do artificial planets do exactly?

They are effectively more expensive and more powerful Econ Starbases that look like planets . It was the most I could do with GC2s modability.

interesting... i'll take a look at it.

also, how'd you mod the SB's appearance? i don't remember seeing that in any of the modding guides i've seen. if nothing else, i can just poke around the files when i get home.

Starbases' appearances are governed by shipcfg files found in the same location as those for the core ships. You can change or replace them to make starbases look however you like.

sweet!
i assume there's a tag that causes some of the pieces to rotate...
does that mean i could manually create a rotating piece on another ship design?
and thanks again kryo, you're great.

In DL the starbases use a single model that includes animation (in the model itself, there is no special means of adding it in a design), but since it is a single whole-starbase model with no hardpoints, it's not really useful for making ships with. I did do some experiments with animation in DL, and while hulls can be animated, jewelry cannot. Combined with the fact that you can't stop the animation to attach parts, it makes it pretty useless for actually making animated ships.

In DA, it appears that animation on ships is ignored completely. The Starbases in DA though are pretty much completely reproducible in the ship designer because they are now made up of smaller components, which are available as jewelry.

Artificial planets... does that mean they can have a population and such?

Unfortunately not, due to the restraints of GC2 modability, they are merely more expensive and more powerful Econ Starbases that look like planets.

I actually created a sphere in a 3D modelling program, textured it with a planet texture and named it after the original model file.

I've just released version 0.6 to the TBS Modder Mod DB and GalCiv2 library. This version adds DA compatibility and more interesting module names.

Just updated it to version 0.7. This fixes bugs and adds a new model for the planet, thanks to Stefan (Terraner05) for making it and the texture. Bug fixes indicated below.

-Constructor modules (and constructors) require the Starbase tech.
-DA version no longer using old econ base models.

Enjoy!

Is this mod supposed to replace the original economy starbases though?
I'm not really fond of that and would rather have both. :/

These do replace the standard econ bases, unfortunately it had to replace one. However, the modules you can install give the same bonuses so unless you liked the way they looked, you are not really losing anything.

I see. Oh well. How about an Influence version though? Especially seeing as how influence bases are fugly and it would perhaps simulate a population on the planet better. Just a suggestion..

A good idea, it's just I thought economic bonuses would be better. Although, cultural bonuses would work as well.

What do others think?

Hi there, this is the new Model with bumpmap and Lightmap =O)

I'm having a bit of trouble. No matter what I do I can't seam to get the planet to show up in the game. I've down loaded the latest mod for DA followed the instructions. Not using it with any other mods and it still shows the old starbase. Everything else works fine and is present.

Any Ideas?

Make sure you have selected it in options and started a new game.

So when's that lightmapped version being released?
Hell, it looks better than the actual planet light maps.

Me and Terraner are talking about working together on making a much improved AP mod that replaces all starbases with different types of planets. Stay tuned .
