The "Dread Lords Return" mega event was a bit of a let down...

plus I noticed some weirdness in AI planet construction

This happened pretty late in the game, when all the major players had significant fleets. When the event Dread Lord event happened, I was expecting fleets of DL attack ships to descend on our galaxy, causing real havoc and overall being a real pain to take care of.

Nope....

All that happened was they were granted a world, no ships even. I sent 3 combat fleets (becuase I am the cautious type) and 8000 of their troops.

Bam, no more Dread Lords, no ships encountered whatsoever.

Maybe this could be a setting of difficulty for mega events, but if such things are described as game changing happenings, I would expect this to be more difficult. All the changed was that I got a decent world near almost all the other races, which would have been a nice staging point if we weren't all so buddy buddy.

Anyway, I love this game, it's fun, but that experience was a bit of a letdown.

Thanks for listening, God Bless

Yeah, minors and especially Dread Lords that pop up late game need to pop up with defenses, there's been a lot of discussion about this and hopefully it'll be addressed in a future update.

The Dread Lords are weird. You can't talk to them (diplomacy) unless they contact you first. When they did, asking me for aid, I looked at doing some tech trading. These guys had every technology!

They're currently parked in another corner of the galaxy, right next to the Iconians. Their ships are awesome but still vulnerable to fleets, and the Iconians regularly destroy their ships, attack their planet, then declare a truce. I guess they (the Iconians) can't field strong enough troops. The end result is I'm sure more than a few high caliber techs get traded in exchange for the truce. So essentially they hand out nice techs to anyone with the gumption to go beat on them for awhile.

They ignore spies and its easy to plant them -they never get countered. I figured it was a great way to not only limit their ship production, but hopefully get a bunch of free techs. Yet while my espionage level went up, and maxed, I didn't get a single tech. Frankly, I'm not even sure if my spies were hurting their production, they were producing ships even though I had every factory on their world covered.

My DL mega-event was a bit bizzare.

They survived, didn't cause much of an issue. I made war on the Korath, and then the DLs started feeding me ships to help.

By the end of the game, we were allied (I wasn't even evil...). Wanted to break my alliance with them, but because you can't bring up the DLs in the foreign policy window, I couldn't. :/

Oh well.

The Dread Lords allied with you? Woah.

Oh, the reason they still make ships is because their home world has a Civilization Capital, which produces some manufacturing points.

Yep, they were total suckups.

They were fairly weak, being kept down by spies and whatnot. So the Korath had them nervous. After they sent me some ships, I decided to speak to 'em, and couldn't pass up the chance to ally myself with them.

Please make a post about this in the Bug Reports forum so the devs see it. You should not be able to communicate with the Dread Lords at all, under any circumstances.
