When do I get to see some Mega Events?

I have been playing humans on a gigantic map in sandbox mode (normal rules, challenging difficulty) for quite some time now and am wondering whats up with the mega events. I read beta-AAR's where people were telling fascinating stories about events that had the potential to really topple the balance in a galaxy - so where are those pirate invasions, plagues and stuff - did I miss an option where to turn those mega events on and off or are they just happening very rarely?

There is an option to toggle them on the galaxy creation screen--make sure you haven't inadvertently disabled them.

About how frequent are they?

the descriptions i've read suggest they're designed to shake up the mid/late-game; i'm not sure how (or if) the game code determines when "mid-game" is, or if is simply waits X number of turns.

but in any respect, i think part of the point of them is that they're unpredictable. i'd say, play a bit longer or another game and you'll get a better sense for them.

I'm sure it's X number of turns. I have never once gotten a mega-event, but that's because I don't bother with Huge galaxies.

I wish we had early game events. The early game is a bit too cookie-cutter. An economic or research boom in mid-colony rush would be fun.

It isn't necessarily the point in the game where you are at. They seem to be more of a balancing factor than anything, at least in the games that I have played. If I start to pull too far ahead of the other races, I'm almost certain to see the Pirates! spawn in my area of influence. In larger maps, this usually happens a little later in the game, but on a tiny map this can happen quite early. Really it's more how the game is playing out rather than the timeframe.

Thanks for your replys everyone! It's just that my game is almost 10 hours old and I haven't encountered any events other than the ones I already know from DL which makes me wonder if there is anything MEGA about to happen in my peaceful galaxy. Other than that, I really enjoy the game - thumbs up Stardock!

I just had a 10 hour game. Even through the first half of the game, then I dominated late. The first 9 hours had no mega-events, then in the last hour there were 4 that hit our galaxy... errr literally

I think i've experienced one because it did kinda mess my empire up, spy's appeared on ALL of my planets but they chose economic and production buildings so on planets that were taking 3 turns to pump out ships they were now taking 12 turns and my economy went from +103bc a week to -14bc a week and it cost a hell of alot to get rid of them all.
