One Starport Challenge.... (or strategy?)

So yesterday I decided to set myself a challenge for my evening game:
I would not build any starports, and I would immediately destroy any starport I captured from an enemy. Therefore my only starport would be the one I started with on my home planet.
I decided to attempt this challenge on a large match, since on anything smaller it would be far less of a "challenge" because of the shorter distances involved, and anything larger would take too long to get done in one night. So I ended up going with 4 "challenging" opponents on a large map with "abundant" everything, scattered clusters, and normal research speed.
I decided the best victory to go for would be an influence victory, that I would want a big homeworld, and that I would need each of my ships to be as effective as possible. Therefore I chose the Thalians for the 15PQ homeworld and 10% miniaturization. Then I modified their abilities for maxed influence and happiness.
I won't bore you with the details, but the end result was that I colonized about 50% of the planets on the map during the colony rush and then influence slowly but surely started taking planet after planet away from my foes. Admitedly the AI did not seem all that aggressive in this game, which helped a lot, but my vastly superior tech level may have helped with that a lot.
Here are some of the things I learned/experienced:
I was able to set Military at 1%, social at 49%, and research at 50% and basically never touch them again. The only exception was early on before the colony rush when I didn't want any military building at all, then I used 0% Military.
I didn't build a single economic, military, or influence starbase.
