Late Thursday Wired broke news that the short-lived Fox series 'Firefly' will be making its triumphant return. Instead of returning to the silver screen the western-sci-fi series will be making its re-debut via an MMOG. News has it that middleware maker Multiverse will be helming the development and expects to have something playable available by 2008.
"We see virtual worlds as an extraordinarily promising new entertainment medium," said Adam Kline, Fox Licensing's vice president of media enterprises in an e-mail to Wired.com. "We believe Multiverse can deliver an experience that will remain true to the original series, while enabling a whole new level of personal involvement for fans."
Firefly had a short 11 episode run, even though 14 episodes were made and are available on the DVD set, on Fox before being canceled in late 2002. Joss Whedon, the series creator, managed to get the series spun-off into the full length motion picture 'Serenity' in 2005 which was met with generally positive reviews.
"Television series can be really good properties to turn into MMOs, because when you make a TV series, not only do you need great characters, but you need to create a full, rich, compelling place," said Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges. "If you're doing science fiction, you have to really think it out and create an incredibly rich environment that is compelling in its own right, and worth exploring and going back to week after week. That's what Joss Whedon did with Firefly."
