Colony Upgrade

What Happens to Population?

I built too many colony ships during the initial expansion, and ran out of planets. So I upgraded the extra colony ships to constructors. What happens to the population on the colony ship when it gets upgraded?

You loose it.
You'd be better off getting the colony ship to a planet first and land.
You can upgrade all colony ships at once whilst they are landed without loosing any population.
Alternatively, land, then re-launch the ship but with only 1 colony on board, then upgrade.

That sounds like a great premise for a science fiction horror story.

As for surplus loaded colony ships, I also like to upgrade them to Transports. Keep them as colonies until you're almost at the target enemy planet (oh, look, we're just a harmless luxury cruise ship with Buzz Lightyear as our celebrity guest) then the "colonists" put on their military uniforms and attack when the ship upgrades. heh.
