Enhanced combat viewer?

I remember seeing this on the Dark Avatar feature list, but I haven't been able to find any actual details on this. What enhancements will the combat viewer see, specifically? Will it just be further refinements to movement and weapons, or will we actually see some more complex effects and scenarios?

(...And here is where my question cunningly morphs into a suggestion...)

Personally, I think it'd be great if the number crunching combat mechanism and the visual depiction of it weren't forced to be synchronized so much. For example, some of the mass driver weapons are supposed to fire at very considerable rates, but instead, they get the same "one shot per round" as all other weapons.

While the same stat based combat could be occuring behind the scenes, the ships could be actively manuevering for position and hammering at each other with all mounted weaponry. Instead of the methodical combat we see now, we could have a cinematic light show, where the visual depiction would only line up with the stats when damage is done (explosions on the hull) or a ship is destroyed.

I would love something like this! However, this may not be what they meant. From the pictures I've seen, they have either added a hull size even bigger than Huge, or made the larger hulls seem larger visually, because in this picture, (Link, Top Picture) One hull absolutly dwarfs the Merium Terran Hull.

Or, it may be the viewer will present more dramatic views.

The apparently increased scale DOES look nice... but I really hope that there is more work on the special effects end...

What was originally meant by the "enhanced combat viewer" bullet point?

You'll just have to wait and see about that (I don't think we've actually disclosed just what that's about yet)

Heh! As long as it is awesome, my objections to being ignorant are null and void!

Not to bash current bumb car combat viewer too much, but it cannot get much worse can it. In my mind simple formations for ships in combat viewer would alone make it alot better.

Formations on each side would fix the stupid looking effects like mass drive bullets following the ships around the space. Looks very silly

I'm very excited to know. I personally like watching the battles in the viewer. I imagine all the little beings screaming in terror as my mass drivers punch through their puny hulls and eject them into the vacuum of space. Good times...

Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but I'd just like to thank the devs for the new combat viewer... its a treat to watch!

Still a few bugs, though. For example, some components aren't giving engine trails when they look like they should be. Also, the mass drivers are both painfully slow and poorly aimed (visually)... if we're talking about hyperdrive assisted pieces of metal, lets have them be bolts through space, similar to the current effects for Photon Torpedoes III. They're also being fired at odd trajectories that aren't accurately leading their targets. The weapon "impacts" a fair distance from its target.

Finally, the camera needs a bit of tweaking. Once one side's ships are wiped out, the camera often freaks out for a short while. Also, Cinematic view sometimes shows you the least interesting pieces of the battle (though, admittedly, sometimes the things it shows you are damned cool)

My griping and nitpicking aside, nice job. The improved effects, sounds, and movements are hugely appreciated.
