Can't change file type icons

Hi. I'm new to this software - I just downloaded the trial version of IP a few days ago. I don't seem to be able to change the icon for a file type (I first tried it with media files (.mp3, .mpeg, etc) but it seems to be the case with all file types). I've done a right click, selected Change Icon, and chosen the new icon, but after I click OK the icon doesn't change, and IP freezes. Any suggestions? I'm using WinXP, new computer.

I have LiquidIcon XP, a freeware program that extracts icons from ICL files (among other things).

I've seen other posts regarding other apps that handle icons (can't remember which) - and if they had control of icons, the icon packager had trouble with associations
