Psuedo Minor Races

Using Major races as Minors

Often I see minor races pop up and within half a galactic year they are absorbed into some other major races empire. Over all I'm a little upset that minor races don't have as much staying power (although I have seen one or two over the course of several games build up a huge home fleet and stick around the whole game). Usually they are just a liability.

So I had this idea and tried it out in my last game to set up pseudo-minor races. On a large sized galaxy I had 7 other races plus me making 8 total major powers. However for 2 of the major powers, I dropped their Intellegence rating down to around beginner area where as the other races were kept somewhere up near challenging or whatever I happend to be playing on (I can't remember off the top of my head at the moment).

Anyway, it worked out really cool. The Thalan and Arceans were the two 'minor' races and as expected controlled only like 4 or 5 systems - maybe 7 planets total. But the fact that they could build starbases and control space 'territory' and what not was lots of fun. Anyway just wanted to tell you all about this neat and successful idea I had.

The last two games I've played the Minors have gone berserk, conquring people and being semi-major players in the galaxy.

Your idea is interesting though, I'll have to try it out.

Nice idea. The only downside is that for metaverse games it would effectively lower the difficulty. But it might be interesting to try anyway.

Wow, great idea. I've seen major races do this before, but I never thought of cultivating them as a de facto minor race. Thanks for the tip.

Civilization bonsai.

In stuff like classic Sci-Fi like Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylong 5, Hitchhikers' Guideetc, there are hundreds of other races. Others have fewer, more consolidated alien species, such as Battlestar Galactica, Freelancer Astro Boy, Halo, any of the thousands of not-licensed-in-the US animes.

I prefer the former, with lots of little guys to keep track of and a few majors.

I make quasi-majors out of minors by giving them worlds.

It's great fun. They don't project any influence or control any space, but if you ramp up their economies they will fight when attacked, and will be aggressors. For this reason they're usually my best allies. No competition for territory.

But for all that there are a few minors who never become belligerent, even though they build warships. The Jessuins usually do, and the Snathi are awesome fighters. But the Scottlingas and the Akilians or Andians aren't particularly violent.

At least, not in my experience.

Maybe I was just lucky, but in my current 1.31 game one of the minors, the Fundamentalists IIRC, wiped out the Korx. Admittedly the Korx didn't have a terrific starting position and the game was only set to "tough" but I think it shows that minors can sometimes play some role.

See, that has literally never happened to me.
Sometimes, I'm playing through the game during a massive galactic war, and all of a sudden - poof! I get a video and message stating that a minor race has been exterminated.
They're good if you want lots of trade variety, but overall I barely even notice them - their planets are hard to find, too. I agree- the only way for ME to make them noticable is to give them free stuff every turn.
I do'nt know about you, Farkas, but I wish cool stuff like that would happen.

The Fundamentalists are triggered by a galactic event causing worlds to defect left right and centre to form a new evil-hating major power. It's quite probable for them to kill off a major power especially if a big chunk of that power's worlds defected to the Fundamentalists.

Unless ofc I'm thinking of completely the wrong event.
