Ground Combat graphics

Great work on Gal Civ II, very much appreciated. The AI work is outstanding!

I am looking forward to the next expansion.

A few requests, would it be possible to update the visuals for ground combat.

1. Updating the visuals/graphics to reflect soldiering bonus and levels. When I research a new tech that creates better soldiering capabilities, it would be great if the appearances of the troops would change. Especially if you get a unique tech such as Tir Quan training it would be nice to have some visual (bling reflective of your alignment, maybe a cool banner carried by the troops) that shows that soldiers are getting tougher or if the enemy has it you can see that in the fights.
2. Is it possible to updating the visuals/graphics so that each race has a more distinctive race look for their soldiers?
3. At the beginning when you are in the set up, would it be possible to select your troops appearance, along the lines of when you choose your race colours for your ships. Maybe with several choices for troops…
4. The ability to mod your soldiers would be cool

5. Adding of special units graphics to the attack i.e. tanks, battle mechs, space marines, fighters as they become available. To liven up the battles

Signage. I'd love to see some buffs for planetary invasions.

One of my favorite parts!

6.When invading planets with different environmental norms, a specific type of soldier or combat mechs appear for that specific invasion i.e. invading a high gravity world would show the troops as specially adapted to deal in that situation not your standard troops
7.That minor races be given a distinctive look to their troops (providing more satisfaction when crushing them)
8.That alignment changes the appearance and weaponry of troops. If a Civ changes alignment during the course of the game, that their troops reflect this i.e. if Altarians change from good to evil de to a random event that their combat troops change in look as well.
9.That asteroids can be invaded and captured by special units of troops i.e. space marines could capture asteroid stations thus asteroid bases would have to be defended in return.
10.The need to build a military base to train units before you could just load up pop from a planet and send them on their way i.e. allowing special units to be created to augment your invasion fleet.

just a few additional thoughts along these lines...

Nice ideas,
I would like to see a little enhancement in ground combat,
at least in the graphics.
Now they are looking boring. There is no excitement whatever
in looking at some digits counting down.

Suggestion to SD. Create some kind of "mask" (HUD, Battlecam...),
make some battlefootage (grainy low res bw, night vision....) for
various unit types (fighter HUD on attack run, marine helmetcam,
tank gunsight), enironments (urban, desert, forest), situations
(attack, defense, overun, victory..), voiceovers (under attack,
enemy sighted....).
Due to the mask and low res it should be relativly easy to make.
In combat this live footage could be displayed in a small window
popup, giving some kind of involvement and is much more varied then
now. Maybe some users can create additional voiceovers or "films".

you wanna see a mod for planetary invasions?

visit: my Mod and graphic page

there you can see some trailer of my mod projects and the battleground mods
under the album: starwars invasion or Galciv2 Videos of Mods

maybe available in the complete (1.0) Dark Avatar release,
or sooner in the library.

Some of my weapon effects will be inside too =o)

I feel that most graphics and cutscenes are eventually cut short because the player wants to move on with the game. Sure, it would be nice to see a fighter HUD, but how often would you be willing to see it again?

In my experience, even very good cutscenes are skipped after a few views and since they are (relatively) expensive to produce, I'm not sure how much value they would add to the game aside the short-lived wow-factor.

Something more than just a bunch of guys running on to a feild and shooting. Maybe like what you guys said, when you get net techs you should see a change. Prehaps new tanks or weapons used.

when, then a change from the beginning, via modding, the tanks are models which were used by this Invasion scene, the weapons are 3, the Wfx_laser01, a rocket and a simple massdriver, what I did in my mods is to change/improve the Weapons to give a more impressive atmosphere, as you can see on my page I linked above.

;o)

the tanks are moddable of course, but I just didn't succeed in that they are destroyed, they just stop^^ =o)
( I modded big flying ships into it^^)

Yes to all. Better planet invasions are a must!

I think that having the battlescene modified by your invasion tactic might be cool too: Giant waves sweeping the enemy away with Tidal Disruption, planetary impacts from Mass Drivers, actual models for Minisoldiers on the battlefield, etc.

If I remember correctly, it was stated that the graphics will be updated with the Arnor Twilight expansion. Just one more thing to click past! Im too busy looking at the number of troops when I click the "skip" button anyhow.

True....I barely look at it too, and never let the animation play out at all, because it is boring and time-consuming. If it was more interesting, I might actually watch it.
