Benefits of Minor Races

I haven't been playing that long. When I started trying to learn the game I disabled Minor Races to minimize the number of things I had to deal with. Since then, pretty much by habit, I've played with Minor Races disabled.

My question is what am I missing with Minor Races off? What extra depth of game or other benefit do they provide?

$$$$.

They're really, really fun to rip off. You can use them as little bezerkers, or as banks. Whatever you want really.

oh i love minor races.

The best hting about them is always the planets are them are high PQ i like to grab those then have a trade route that is like 2 squares long then you dont really have to worry about getting them attacked and they start up really quick since your freightors dont have to go far.

they also trade tech for cheaper.

You can make lots of money selling techs to them. They also make the perfect trade partners if you're working toward a military conquest victory, because you don't need to conquer them to win.

Of course, they also have Class 15 planets, which are nice to have if you decide to invade; particularly if you've sold them lots of improvement techs and given them time to build up the place before you take it.

Other than that, they just add a bit of flavor. Sometimes I make a secondary objective out of making a minor civ my little buddies and keeping them alive throughout the game. Of course, if they've grabbed up a galactic resource, that doesn't mean I can't smack their greedy little hands, take the resource, then make peace again next turn...

They save micromanagement in larger galaxies. Not only can you just establish a single well-traveled stable trade route with them for massive $ and virtually no effort, but they can hold planets for you. I almost always play on Gigantic, and I usually end up with literally a couple dozen planets that I don't want or need. It's not practical to deny these planets to enemies by razing them (since they can be recolonized) and I'm certainly not willing to have them cluttering my lists and taking up cash (and getting invaded!), so I gift them to an allied minor race and the minor keeps track of them for me. Very, very, very handy.

Oh doh, hits forehead in a Homer Simpson kind of way!

Why did'nt I think of this?

I hate PQ 8 or less planets, so I could gift/trade them to my underlings, they develop/build them up, wow that's brilliant!
