Space battles have my nerves shot

Some of these are downright scary! Its like I hit the play button, watch my ships fight it out and during the close battles, my nerves are shot. I almost feel like biting my finger nails. Its like watching a close football game or something, cheering on your favorite team. I actually find myself cheering on my ships. I love those battles.

Its like, my last game, I created a massive dreadnaught. I named it HTAED, which is DEATH spelled backwards. I had 3 cannon turrets on each side, then I had a twin turret on top of the ship. So 8 total guns all together. This ship done what I had hoped it would do, at least until the AI caught on to my design. Anyway, this ship destroyed entire fleets all by itself, man was it tough! When it opened fired, boom, boom, boom! I destroyed about 4 fleets of tiny and small hulled ships. Even a fleet of 3 frigates. To make a long story short, I was going for a tech victory this game. The AI decided to make it tough on me and that it did. Only 2 techs from the victory, and all went to hell. My so called all powerful HTAED dreadnaught met its match, and was destroyed, one after another. Had a large battleship design, the Triton class, was solid but could not compete.

The thing is, a minor race was owning me! Then the Korx, they had some of the most powerful ships I have ever seen in GalCiv2. I am talking 50+ attack rating and 30+ shields! So when they asked for money, I gave it to them, everytime. I did not want any part of that. I had enough just fighting this minor race who was owning me.

One thing I learned this last game, just because an enemy ship does not have missile defense, does not mean your missiles will hit and do damage everytime. I don't know what it was, must have been strong hulls or something, because my missiles could not damage the ships of this minor race, they never had ANY missile defense either. I imagine the same is true for the other weapon classes.

At last, this is one hell of a game I have going on, I am down to only 2 planets left. One of them is dropped down to a 3 quality from all of the wars fought on it, now its nearly useless. I know I won't win, came close but not close enough. I may end up conquered before its over, probably so, 1 planet left and nothing to compete with the enemies powerful ships. It has been a ton of fun though, a TON of fun. I noticed, it seems the AI must have been greatly improved in the lastest beta which is what I am playing here.

Ship design is a major part of this game and almost a game in itself. I can't wait for that expansion to be released because we will have most ships and components.

I'm glad you like it! I just started playing myself and boy does the time fly!

As for your missles not hitting them....the other defenses count towards each other (missle defense helps beam and rail gun) however they do it at a MUCH lower amount than they would on their own class.

Um, by the time you're thinking about tech victory, you should have maxed out at least one weapon tech. A huge ship should be able to mount 6 or 7 black-hole disruptors or doom rays easily. After bonuses, it's not impossible to get a *medium* ship with an attack in the region of 150 or so.

Take into account new miniturisation? I'm reckoning a huge could top 240 easy.

It does tend to get addictive. There is a reason so many of my games are posted ~3am (midnight my time).

I was very far into the mass drivers but the AI ships started to stack on armor, too much which caused me to start researching missiles. The attack rating, I am referring to the AI, you mean there have been AI ships with 150 attack? Whats the most powerful AI ship you all have ever seen since this patch? I guess I should have said the most powerful AI ships I have seen in GalCiv2 so far.

What I wonder, is it wise to switch when the AI starts to build counter designs? Maybe its better to just make the same but more powerful. Maybe even with the armor, I should have kept on researching down the mass driver tree.

Oh and yes, this game is extremely addicting, extremely. Me liking it is an understatement, I love it!

As you near the end of the weapon and defense tech branches, the weapons outpace the defenses. One Black Hole Gun has attack 16 and one Zero-Point Armor only defense 10. The defenses are smaller than the weapons but are also much more expensive. If your cruisers and dreadnoughts are going up against fighters and frigates than putting more than attack 80 is a waste since they can only kill one ship at a time. Use the remaining space for defense and lots of HyperWarpIII engines. In my current game my cruisers each have 4 such engines giving them a speed of 4 * 6 + 4 = 28!
