Control over Effective Galaxy Size

Right now there are some useful controls over effective galaxy size. Of course, there is the size option itself. Then the user's ability to select relative frequencies of stars, planets, habitable planets, etc. allows the user to vary the effective size. So far so good.

My suggestion...

To complete this functionality allow the user to select the cost/time to develop range related techs such as "life support" without affecting the rest of the tech trees. With this addition, one could make a gigo-normous effective galaxy by making range techs very costly and/or time consuming, while playing in an gigantic galaxy with, say, abundant frequencies.

I would enjoy this very much (I think) since I take a kind of rpg approch to the game and this would better represent the structure of the galaxy and add much excitement to a new encounter.

This is probably an easy mod, but I'm not a modder. Also, I think that this should be considered for addition of the nest update currently in beta.

Take care.

I agree. I rarely need range modules for my ships at all past the early stages. I tried to mod it, but I couldn't find a way to change the base range of a hull, only the effectiveness of the range modules.

Almost a super-awesome idea, but not so much.

I'd really like what you're going for (effectively larger galaxies), but this wouldn't do it. Both myself and the computers would end up with the range tech anyway, thus giving the same result as the current situation but slower.

I think this option should be implemented, but the change would be to the actual bonuses rather than the cost/time of the techs. The techs would be just as easy to research, but you could set it such that the results are, say, half as much once you're finished. This way, the galaxy would be "larger" no matter how much research each race performed, and starbases and conquered planets would be much more important for extending your range.

Also, the range cap should be removed, such that we could make a super-long-range ship by adding life support to it.

Well, maybe add an option for setting a speed or range multiplier. 50% speed or 50% range would shrink the galaxy (similar to someone else's idea). It might give more control over this factor.

I'm all for what DreadArchon suggested, except I'm not sure if removing the range cap is possible--I recall it being explained that ship range and sensor range had their hard-coded caps because things start acting weird after a certain point.

A similar speed setting might not work as well, though, as you're then dealing with something that has a much more widespread effect; it might prove detrimental to the warfare strategy in the game, for example. Of course, it's also possible that I'm just being overly cautious...
