Weak Militarily - Need Help

I do great building a strong economy and Influence, but I always find myself behind the curve militarily.

The only combat ship I have ever built is the Defender, I dont see how to build other ships. I'll complete a tech that says so and so ship will be available with 1 other tech, but it never says what that other tech is.

Is there a list somewhere of what techs you need to build what ships?

Basically, the 'Core' ships are very poor and few in number. If you want to compete with the AI, you need to design your own ships (one of the most popular parts of the game, BTW) using your latest technologies as you research them.

lol.

anyway, If you'll look at the hull design techs in your technology menu, you should find a list of the ships that requre that tech in the description pane on the right, and what other techs they need so you can use them. And since all ships except the veeeeeery smallest need hulls researched, that should give you an idea of what most ships require. customizing is still a better choice because it allows you to change on the fly whereas core designs may not meet your needs if the AI does something unexpected, or if you don't want to research everything they require (or if they don't look "pimp" enough for ya).

I told know what the people at Stardock were thinking when they choose what to put on the CORE ships; they certainly were not think about SPEED!
You can design war ships better than the AI. Pick a weak AI target that is close to your borders and not allied to a strong AI. Look at what weapons and defenses that AI is using, research weapons and defenses to counter them, and then build that ship. Don't forget to include enough speed on your ships so that you can pick and choose your battles.

Yes, very few people who play this game play with the core ships. Go to the ship yard and design your own dewd...... not only are they more powerful, but they are of your own design so you can be proud of them as well!

For some reason I have never seen the custom ship building area.

I'll look into that tonight when I get home.

It is the far right button on the bottom of the main display, or you can reach it from the planet screen, there there is a button labeled Starport.

Thanks for all the info guys. I love playing this game, I think about it while I am at work and what my next moves are gonna be.

Now I really want the day to come to an end so I can get home and "Pimp My Warships"

Does speed help in the battle or just getting to the battle? If it does how?

Just getting to the battle. Before version 1.2 the fleet that started the battle got a free attack at the beginnng that defending ships couldn't respond to. This made initiating combat (and thus, having higher speed than your enemies) hugely important.

This isn't the case anymore, but you still want speed to get your ships where they are needed as quickly as possible, etc.

Speed is crucial for unarmed ships like Transports, especially if you can't spare an escort for them. It isn't really as important on Small or smaller maps, but it is hugely important for Gigantic (and Huge) galaxies where civilizations are dozens of parasecs apart.

One strategy, though, is to fill a Medium Hull (or even a Cargo Hull, if you don't intend to actually go to war) with weapons and defenses and nothing else, then park it at a world as a permanent defender. You can also do this with Sensors to make ships with huge sensor ranges.

Speed allows you to determine where, when you engage the enemy or even just plain evade him (run away).

Remember it doesnt matter how many military ships the AI has if you kill all its transports they cant win.

A good strategy I use in almost all my games is to research up the Mass Driver Tree until I get NANORIPPERS (I think this is around Singularity Driver IV) -- one of the more powerful weapons in the game.

Then I design a small ship with 2 or 3 of these weapons, no engines, no shields and use these to defend my planets -- one or two per planet will protect them while I research up the Beam Weapon Tree and Engine Tree. Once I get some fast enough engines, I'll start designing ships to counter what my enemy is using.

Speed is indeed crucial in this game and I often keep my faster ships in starport until I see enemy transports within range. Then I will make some quick hit and run tactics to take the enemy transports out. Their fighters might go after my planets but with my Rippers in defense the best my opponent can hope for is a pyrrhic victory with heavy heavy losses. Seems to keep the balance in check until I can create some Medium Sized Cruisers and Capital Ships and begin my assault in earnest.

Have fun!

Yeah dude you need to make your own ships, a lot of times my ships are so different looking that the hulls are only a place to put structures.

Funny. I never spend too much time making my ships look good.

I select a hull, double click engines, double click sensors, and then double click weapons and defenses... I often get a ship with weapons on the back and engines on the front and a sensor node hanging off the side... but I've seen some of those mod ships people have made -- great looking stuff...

For me it doesn't need to look pretty -- it just needs to get the job done.
