What Happens In The Campaign? (Spoilers!)

I don't really enjoy the Gal Civ 2 Campaign, but I like the story so I was wondering if someone could explain what happens in it for myself and for anyone else who doesn't want to play it. If you can, I would really appreciate it.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

The Drengins hand the other race's rears to them on a silver platter. The Humans set up a shield around earth with an ancient device (nothing gets in OR out), then the remaining human refugees proceed to take over the planet where the Dreadlords were improsoned when the story began and improson themselves within the pocket dimension created by the Arnor at the end of the Arnor/Dreadlord war.

For those of us who didnt understand that highly complex summary of the story, what?

Wow, this is insane. I was just logging in to post this exact same question myself (for the exact same reasons) and I see it right there on top of the recent posts sidebar. Crazy.

I would appreciate a bit more detail, however, like a mission by mission short synopsis if anyone would take the trouble to write it.

Also, I have pre-ordered Dark Avatar, but I have one heartfelt request for the devs re: the new campaign. I want to get into the story and enjoy the campaign, so could it please be arranged so that the entire tech tree doesn't need to be re-researched every mission? More focus on story and action and less on planetary/research developement (on the further in missions, that is, obviously in the first couple development makes sense). Now, I only made it to about mission 3 or 4 before I quit in frustration and began playing sandbox exclusively, so if this actually does happen further on into the campaign I apologize.

With such a complex and well developed storyline it should be easier to get into and feel a part of.

You can read the individual campaign scenario descriptions/introduction by going to the .xml files located at (asssuming default GC2 program installation location):
C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Data\English\Campaigns

The files are titled Mission**_Text.xml where ** is the mission number the "a" ("b") designations are the follow-on mission where the prior mission was a win (loss) I think. There are a total of 10 missions.

No, that's wrong.

The interesting files are the .g2scenario-files which have the intro-text, the text you get after winning and the text you get from losing. Simply open them in a text-editor and read the text after Description=, Victory= and Defeat=.

They should be read in the following order.

[Mission0]
Scenario=An Unexpected Visitor.gc2scenario
[Mission1]
Scenario=Desperate Ally.gc2scenario
[Mission2]
Scenario=Ixith.gc2scenario
[Mission3]
Scenario=The Xenon Project.gc2scenario
[Mission4]
Scenario=Darkness Rising.gc2scenario
[Mission5]
Scenario=Siege.gc2scenario
[Mission6]
Scenario=Hearts and Minds.gc2scenario
[Mission7]
Scenario=Achilles' Heel.gc2scenario
[Mission8]
Scenario=Arms Race.gc2scenario
[Mission9]
Scenario=The Thalan.gc2scenario
[Mission10]
Scenario=Apocalypse.gc2scenario
[Mission11]
Scenario=Exploitation.gc2scenario
[Mission12]
Scenario=Deception.gc2scenario
[Mission13]
Scenario=Pathfinder.gc2scenario
[Mission14]
Scenario=Salvation.gc2scenario
[Mission15]
Scenario=Escape.gc2scenario

Note that some missions only happen if you "lose" the preceding one.

Enjoy!

Thanks Ignuss and Tertullian! That is exactly what I was looking for.

Man the Drengin suck, but then again, my custom race are a righteous, paladins in space, all evil must be destroyed no matter the cost people who declare war on the Drengin and Yor right off the bat even if they are immensely more powerful...so I'm a bit biased. It leads to some fun games, though, especially when the Terrans and Torians decide that my benevolent imperial rule is a threat to their freedom. The Altarians always seem to have my back, though.

Can't wait to see the story continue in Dark Avatar.

What I'm wondering is how it goes from Terrans and co. have been beating up Drengin everywhere to Drengin-suddenly-rule-the-galaxy-and-everyone-else is just a pitiful resistance movement.

And what happens to the Yor, the Drengin's "ally" in Dark Avatar (maybe they turn on their meatbag friends. After all, the Drengin are just as organic as the rest of us). And can someone tell me what becomes of the Dread Lords at the end of the campaign.

Hah, I was wondering that too. Especially since the Drengins/Yor/Dreadlords/etc. were never big on building many (read: any) combat ships when I played the campaign.

Quotes from the campaign.
Spoilers of course.
We have contacted the Drengin Ambassador to discuss a truce so that we can pool our forces against this new enemy... but the Drengin response was chilling. The Drengin Ambassador put it like this: "Here is what is going to happen. You and your pitiful allies are going to fight these new beings. We will give ground to them. Most of the worlds we occupy are not inhabited by Drengin anyway so those people will perish. But you pathetic humans and the fool Arceans will try to save your worlds from annihilation. The fight with these Dread Lords will cost you a great deal. If you win the day, your forces will be weak and we will crush what's left. If you lose, then we will deal with the Dread Lords. In either event, you humans will have interfered with our plans for the last time. Earth will be ours."
...
Nearly a year has passed since the Dread Lords were unleashed on the galaxy. The Drengin Empire has given way to them without fighting.
...
With the main force of the Dread Lords seemingly defeated, the Drengin Empire and its cruel robotic ally, The Yor, have begun to strike.||You have done very well in your missions. The war, however, is not going well overall. The Dread Lords took an immense toll on our military. While the Terran Alliance bore the brunt of it, the Arcean Empire was also hard pressed.

Before the campaign, The Drengins and Arceans had massive fleets compared to the other races. Then the Drengin surprise attacked the Arcean, devastating much of their fleet, and released the Dread Lords. The Dread Lords inflicted heavy damage to the Coalition fleets, this war lasted over a year so there were probably lots of battles that the player weren't involved in with lots of casaulties. When the Dread Lords were defeated by the Coalition, the Drengin and Yor had a massive superiority, and the Coalition had no chance.

How do you get a 314% research bonus? Is this a civilization wide bonus or an individual planet bonus? As far as I can tell the max civilization research bonus would be 20% for racial ability, 20% for Technologists Party, 10% for the Planetary Improvement tech and 20% for the Hyper Computer trade good for a total of 90%. There's also 100% for Technology Capital and 50% for Omega Research Center, but they only apply to a single planet. Also each economic SB can give a 24% boost to research for planets within their influence, so it's certainly possible to get a planet bonus up to 16 x 24% + 150% = 534% but a 314% civilization wide bonus is incredible. What am I missing?

Ditto, and I second your request for the Dark Avatar campaign to not be so much like playing a gimped version of sandbox. I believe it could have been done a lot better. However, don't feel bad, devs, because sandbox mode is just freakin AWESOME and you get mad kudos for making the game. I am super happy that your focus was on sandbox because that's what has me replaying 4X games over and over again
