AI on 'Normal' v1.3b

Did the AI get dumb or something, or was it always that way on 'Normal'?

I've only had the game for a week, and I've never had the 'noob get's pwned by AI' usual start on new games...

For instance on my current game (common evrything, AI allowed to eat my CPU) I out colonized most of the AI empires, have never needed to buy defense ships, and have flipped alot of planets with Influence bases... You would think that they'd be upset that i'm driving deep into everyone's areas and dropping Influence bombs (full suite of upgrades) right on their planets.

I've been told once by two different races that they're 'concerned' by one of these bases near their planets, and got told by another race that Someone else was attempting to do exactly what I'm doing to them.

Planet building is easy on this level, and the only 'slow' part about researching is the sheer amount of things to research *especially for military tech.

Is 'Normal' not actually 'Normal'? or should I crank it right to the top to get a reaction fromt he AI?

The AI is actually still gimped a bit at Normal (it's just called that based on how a user is expected to fare at that level, not becuase of anything the AI does). When the individual AIs are set to Intelligent, they have all their facilities at their disposal. Above that, they get extra bonuses (but still have to play by the rules otherwise).

I typically find the TOUGH difficulty setting a decent challenge. Dial it up a few notches if it isn't a challenge.

Yeah, I agree. Normal is a bit too easy. I have never lost a game at the normal setting. The next level up "challenging" is a quite a bit better.

Normal was made a bit easier in 1.3 because we added some new difficulty levels at the top end.

(this thread)

Normal will be tougher than it was because there's a new easier difficulty level
(taken from the 1.3-Beta-1 change log.)

Which one is right?
