Boring

Don't get me wrong. I adore this game, but does anyone else think the Arceans, Torians, Iconians, and Thalan are boring and lack any kind of personality? It just seems as if the they can be described in one word each (I'm not saying that you do that with the other races, but this case takes it to the extreme). The Arceans are simply 'neutral', the Torians...they're just bland, the Iconians are 'wise', and the Thalan are simply 'insectoid'. Not to nag or anything, but GalCiv in general needs more originality.

What would you have in mind?

Well the expansion will allow you to custom create your opponents. I cant wait for that feature. It's fine blowing up Drengans and Korxians but I am looking forward to vaporizing some of my personal favs....

Female leaders would be a great start.

Then maybe stuff like:

+Jaded Explorers "If I had a BC for every time I ran into humanoids..."
+Transdimensional Creatures "You humans are soooo 3-Dimensional!"
+Truly Repulsive Things "You're not so hot to look at either, sport -- when was the last time you saw the inside of a gym? Grade three?"
+Media-Savvy Space Geeks "I greet you with +10 Charisma, Earthling! Na-nu! Na-Nu!"
+Practical Jokers "Pull my tentacle!"
+Gasbag Creatures "DON'T pull my tentacle!"
+Space Medics "I am the ultimate cure -- too bad you're the infection!"
+Clumsy Maladepts "I present to you this ceremonial dagger of Ultimate Friendship -- Oopsie!"
+Telepaths "Stop undressing me with your mind, Earth scum!"
+Transparent Creatures "Out of sight, out of mind."
+Masters of Illusion "Watch me pull a rabbit out my hat, Rocky... Oh, no... no! NO! Arr-ARRRGH!!"
+Gamesters "I bet a thousand quatloos that I can make you die!"
+Brains in Jars "Get out of my galaxy, boneskull!"
+Internet Society "H8U, d00d!"
+Space Cowboys
+Space Monkeys
+Space Bars
+This space for rent... you get the idea. Just, for the love of all that is is good and holy:

NO SPACE ELVES!!!

The thalan leader is female (insects are pretty much always ruled by a queen)

For the races, just add them yourself. Including the dialogue.

I'm looking forward personally to DA, since with genocidal maniacs I have some real good modding oppurtunity

I don't call the Arceans, Altarians and Torians boring, I DO call them *u%ki*$ b&*!!"s, especially just after they have taken one of my planets or wiped out my 16 eco starbases.

Other favs r c*m%!!/e *w$t* and s**$ki*g *rr*!b$e a"$e*o%*$!

U get the picture...

Well the first step to add personality to races would be to add different kinda goverments for each race. It would not take too much effort to generate unique goverment names for different races. In example Thalans would have some sort of insectoid hive thing going while Robotic Yor could have different levels of core processors etc. I have brought this one up to discussion couple times but it has not generated much discussion, maybe its a bad idea

Naming is one thing I know but it would make the games civs feel atleast bit different. If you start giving different race goverments different bonuses, then it can get messy with all the balancing going on. But I would like to see this kinda stuff implemented in expansion pack. Atleast the AI:s would not feel like out of the box dudes with different faces.

Torians piss me off. They ALWAYS attack me. Are Torians suppose to be a warmonger race?

Heh, the Torians act peaceful, but I reckon they're paranoid. That's why they always attack anyone they can. Mind you, with the player they're probably right to be paranoid aren't they?

The Torians have this one quote that I really thought had a lot of flavor. I'm typing this from memory, so forgive me if it's incorrect...

We were slaves, so when we conquer you we know how to make sure that you will never be free again.

Oooohh...

Nasty little guys!

But yeah, some civ's are pretty boring. Fortunately, this game allows you to start up a game with any combination of opponents you want. Can't stand the Yor? Just choose to start with all the other civs instead. I guess the thing I find most compelling about Galciv2 is that there always seems to be a way to make the NEXT game more interesting... maybe abundant planets, slower techs, smarter opponents.

Boring? Maybe this game. Next game I'll choose the starting conditions better to suit my playstyle.

Lots of fun!

Actually, I think the races have quite a bit of character. I hate it when the Torians surrender. I have to finsish them off in one fell swoop so I get the "last world conquered" movie instead. They're kinda cute with their little duck bills (I think ducks are super cute) and when I get the panel that says they give up, the picture shows them frowing. It makes me sad. Kooky, I know. Though, I love to hate the Drengin and Yor and feel the opposite when I get that panel with them.

To create new races simply by adding new dialogue misses the point of creating new races. To suggest that the Thalan leader is the penultimate woman in the game means that not only you have missed the point but have regrettably aimed much too low.

There's more to races than snappy dialogue. They also have to do things that are (stereo)typical to their culture.

Thanks to Star Trek, we have the Kilingons, the kissing cousins to the Drengin. They are incredibly warlike, which is handy for a wargame, which is why this type of civ always seems to show up in sci-fi games. Then you have the Ferengi, the traders or Space Republicans if you will. Then you have various minor Trek races that seem to embody various human cultures, i.e. (IN MY OPINION ONLY) Bajorans (and Zeons) roughly equal the Jewish culture, Cardassians roughly equal Arab culture, Ekosians = Nazis, etc.

But apart from the Drengin, very few of the GalCiv races play up their sterotypical traits other than to talk. The Iconians, for instancearen't terribly wise in most of my games, usually, they're just Drengin-fodder. The Thalans don't do anything insecty (or feminine), in fact, usually they are friendly in my games.

The Torians do have one trait that sets them apart from everyone else: they reproduce like mad. Thing is, they never talk about it at all. You'd never guess by talking with one just how randy they really are. My gay brother-in-law talks more about his bedroom conquests than any Torian (not that I want to hear about that), but at least our family knows he's getting some. My point here is, if you're dong "it" a lot, you tend to talk about "it" a lot, too.

In my examples above, there's plenty of room for adding scripted civ events:

+The clumsy guys can turn the fate of battle just by being clumsy, i.e. Jar-Jar Binks
+The see-thru guys are hard to see
+The brain-in-a-jar guys always have equipment that is extensions of the brain in its jar (Sort of like "Mars Attacks!")
+The gamblers will offer bets as to the outcojme of various space battles
+The Illusionists create phantom ships and armies
+The Space Geeks clog up the Internet with their forum commentary (guilty as charges)

and so on.

Unfortunately, this means more than just adding some dialogue and pictures that are cute as a bag of kittens (apologies to David Mamet here). It means some kind of hard-core game programming stuff, the kind of thing that Stardock is paying their pixel monkeys to do, and, unfortunately, also the kind of thing that's beyond even my admittedly oversized bounds of creativity, at least not without getting paid.

EDIT: Heh, mod beat me to it.

I find the Altarians to be the most dangerous opponents. They are absolutely convinced that they are the good guys. What that means, in effect, is they feel justified no matter what they do.
And who does that remind you of?

Must... resist...
Actually, Twelvefield, I think you're wrong in one area. Just because you're doing it more than an army of rabbits doesn't necessarily mean you talk about it. In fact, in real life, there are cultures and subsections of cultures who have taboos on discussion of that subject. Considering this is polite discussion, they may actually have a cultural taboo on discussion of that subject and simply don't bring it up.

I always thought the Torians and Iconians were kind of boring until today, actually. For the firs time, I decided to play a game as good, and when I did, they both decided to turn evil. And whoever said the Thalans didn't act like insects was wrong on at least one count: they are very industrious. When you take over one of their planets, there are always tons of factories on them.

I just hope that whomever re-writes the dialoges for diplomacy and/or the Tech Tree isn't the same person who wrote the originals.

Oh and Marcathonas...he MUST be talking about Les Francais

I would agree on the Thalans, but if you read the backstory, the Areans and Torians are better defined, and have interesting roles. The Iconians are not so well described, but I think their relationship with the Yor is worth telling, and I'd like to see more about them. IMO there are worse races than the ones you described - The Korx for one.

Perhaps the backstory could be included with the game, in text format? It could be added at the same time as a Galactopedia. Perhaps espionage could reveal extra secret details about their past.

well, i quite like the whole 'you should of never given these inferior races the hyperdrive' with the Thalan, and also, ive started choosing evil, i have to say its much more fun, as will good probably be, i've always chosen neutral, for the bonuses, but recently when playing as the Korx, i chose evil, and its great, i mean the diploomacy side, how other evil races contact you about the threat of the Altarians, and we should work together to bring evil to the galaxy.

And while im at it, has anyone noteced the slight contradiction in DA, i mean, the drengin are better that the 'other' drengin, because the others want to kill all, yet the same applies to the yor, and yet the Yor have a better alignment. hmm

The is a very good post - I must say. I thoroughly enjoy the game with its seemingly endless possibilities. I did run into Stykman22's game when playing good and were ultimately ganged up by the Torians and Arcean.

There is an unnerving parallel to our world as we know it; in that it is actually easier to be evil than to be good. The take no prisoner approach seemed to work better in the game than otherwise. For example, it is the fastest way to acquire technology. May be a more balanced between good and evil is in order here.
