I've had this problem when I minimize and reopen a game sometimes, and I can never get it to play my custom maps without shutting down. No clue how to help, though. Sorry.

Low system memory. Or, you could post the debug here...

CTDs on game start are not a bug in the game, but generally a result of your not having enough RAM/swapfile too small or other technical issues on your end. If you post your debug.err file it will likely confirm this.

Ion,

Please post the contents of your debug.err file here. There is most likely some information in it that will help us to help you.

This file can be found in
C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2

Open the file in any text editor, like Notepad, copy the contents (CTRL+C) and paste them in a reply here (CTRL+V).

Thank you.

Since you can reproduce the problem on demand, install SmartException (via Stardock Central) and then generate the error.

Prior to starting GalCiv II, how much free memory do you have? Press CTRL-ATL-DEL, click on "Windows Task Manager", and then click the "Performance" tab, to see your status.

I think that I am having the same exact problem. I've had GalCiv for several weeks and it has worked fine, but last week I tried to start a new game and it crashed after customizing the galaxy. I can still load saved games though.

There is atleast one other post about this, so hopefully it will be noticed and fixed.

Letmego: looks like you may have gotten a corrupted download. Try uninstalling/reinstalling the game.
Lehtmego, you are trying to run the game at 1280x1024, but your desktop is set to 1152x864.

While playing the game at a lower res might work, trying to get higher will hose you for sure.

Match the resolutions and you might be fine.

And double the page file. It needs 2 gig.

Ion:

First try raising your desktop resolution to 1024x768. This is the minimum resolution for the game and it sometimes has problems if your desktop resolution is lower than what you try to run the game in.

Also, your swap file is quite small, try raising it to at least 1 gb, preferably 2 gb. your video frivers may also need updated--they may be just barely too old for the game, as it requires drivers published in december 05 or better in most cases.
The game is attempting to run at 1024x768, the minimum resolution. Since your desktop is below this, it will crash. Same as page file. These things will make it pretty much impossible to run until you change them.

Drivers look fine (2004 is mimimum) but an update is recommended.
It worked fine like this for 3 months now. Why would those problems start now? hmmm?
Because you changed your resolution setting probably. Either way, at the settings it's at it won't run, at all.
