Process for putting dummies on a model?

Has anyone found a decent process of putting helper dummies (hard points) on a model? I’ve been doing it the old fashion way which takes forever. I’m using 3DS Max 8. Maybe someone from Stardock can explain the process? Thanks for any help in advance.

Assumably they did it manually as well, which is why the mirroring of hardoints on opposite sides of some models is out of whack.

I always wondered about the misplaced hardpoints. Drives me nuts when I actually try to design a ship.
