what does throttle frame rate mean?

hi, i've been messing with the options in the video catorgory so it plays ok on gigantic maps, but what does throttle frame rate mean, i've had it checked for weeks, what will it have done, throttle as in strangle, or as in speed up? thanks

Actually, I'd like to know too... I just left it checked since it started checked... I was thinking that it meant it was similar to a cars throttle in that it gradually raises framerate instead of just instantly trying to change it.

It keeps your video card from trying to draw more than like 60 frames per second. Without it your video card can easily overhead. (esp a good card)

It's not supposed to affect video quality at all. Most hi end games have it.

Some crashes were occuring when high end video cards were overheating.

Throttle frame rate stopped these video card that were running so hot they crashed the system from from processing more than was needed to max out Galciv2 graphics.

Stardock has said that throttle frame rate should not affect any video performance or be observable.

Throttle Frame Rate simply adds a few milliseconds pause in rendering if the FPS excees 100, thus preventing overheating in some cards.
