Researching ships?

Pretty new to playing the game, and I can't seem to figure out how to build the second tier ships, such as heavy fighter etc..

I tried the search function on the board, but it kept timing out.

Research the hull techs. Get at least Advanced Hulls and Medium Scale Building fairly early in the game.

Then design and build your own ships instead of relying on the canned ships.

heavy fighters are actually just a name used by the computer for their ship designs. Small hulls I beleive, with weapons.
Doesn't make much of a difference. You can build them yourself if you name your ships that way.

As for the 'corvettes' the computer uses, they are medium ships. See the previous post here.

Agree with both posts above, at first I was trying to figure out which techs led to "Battleship", "Dreadnaught", "Avatar", "Overlord" etc. These are all standard ships which if you DO research the right techs will pop into the list of available ships. Having said that completely forget them. In this game you NEED to design your own ships. The predefined list are rubbish and that means designing your own colony ships, constructors, transports, sensor ships, survey ships as well as warships.
In general, you will want multiple engines and you will want the best engines you've researched. The standard list puts sensors and life support on all ships... I personally never do (with the exception of some special builds to grab remote resources/planets or act as AWACs ships -assuming I miss out on Eyes of the Universe.).
