I don't turn it off, but I don't make treaties either. I remain neutral. Then the other races join together and attack me. It makes it much more challenging and fun.

However, I suggest that you do whatever you concider to be the best route. Make the game fun however you want.

I've had one alliance victory so far, but as you progress through the game you'll get random occurences, like the assassination of another faction's leader by an extremist group who then break their alliance with you. I guess it also depends on what level of difficulty you are playing on, and how many ai players.

I like diplomatic victories because they cut out the mopping up section of the game. Generally by the time I've taken out the most threating enemies, I've completely outclassed the other friendlty civs. By that point having to go and smash them one by one is not challenging, but merely time consuming.

Diplomatic victories are not at all easy to get on higher difficulty settings, Seeing as the enemy outbuilds you, outtechs you and outdoes you in every way they look down upon you, And it can be real hard to get Diplo-Vics if you dont get off to a good start.

I think the dip victory needs to have a time component. Instead of 'you win the turn after you're allied with everyone, even if they all hate each other and are about to go to war', there should be a time period you have to hold everyone in an alliance using diplomacy. Personally, I'd like the dip victory to be a period of non-combat, instead of 'you win because everyone likes you'. If there's a war going on, eventually whoever it is will come for you. Diplomacy victories should be about a period of peace.
