GalTrek™: The Kronos and The Omen

Star Trek Ship Hulls for GalCiv2

The Kronos and The Omen

(Click thumbnail images for larger version)

Polygon Count (triangles): 538 / 2,502
Defuse Mapping: None.
Light Mapping: Everything.
Normal Mapping: Nope.
Ship Builder Hardware Mounts: Yep.
In-Game Hull Size: Both Small.
Time spent "making it so" : 1 hour / 2 hours.

I am scrounging a bit here for small ships. The Kronos fits nicely into this category, and the Omen, well, just think of it as a mini defiant!

Those of you who are planning on using this hull pack, please go here and submit my form so that I can track how many people are interested.

The lighting here is by no means perfect, but I find that I need to brighten up the smaller ships so they are easier to see in the game..

I have expanded the list of ships at the bottom to 28. At an average of 1300x1300 (1,690,000) pixels for the texture of each ship, we’re dealing with about 50,000,000 pixels in total in video memory if you happen to have an instance of each ship on screen at once. My tests with high texture usage (here) on a 64MB card suggests that it can process 50,000,000 of active pixels in texture memory, so I think even 64MB users should be able to run this mod (though, I really am not sure how texture intensive the stock game models themselves are).

Also, I have been in contact with Cari, and to my dismay, there is no way to change star base models for the player only (actually, it is going to be tricky to even do that for ship hulls). A change to the star base models will result in all races using those new designs. I quiver at the thought of those bastard Drengins using a federation star base. Too bad, because I could have thrown some neat star bases in there.

Stay tuned for updates (use this form if you want to receive email updates when new ships are available).

Spleeze you should explan to these new people. That you do not actually model these ships, you have taken them from other games that people have freely posted IE- SFC3, etc and just converted them so they will work with the Gal Civ2 engine.

Dont get me wrong i love what you r doin, but its good to put credit where credit is due

I thought that he was making the models himself until a few weeks ago when he found a bunch of them pre-made. (The models that he was making before had WAY too many polygons though. over 260,000 triangles for the magella alone.

you maybe right (the excelsor model comes to mind 10hr+)

perhaps spleeze should clarify so we can remove this confusion

Here’s the scoop. None of the ships that I have released recently have been my own ship models. Sorry if I did not make myself clear.

I started this modding project by first building the ships from scratch and using existing high detail (production quality) models. I was spending countless hours hacking and slashing, rebuilding geometry, creating new textures, etc.

The oberth, shuttle, the original delta flyer, the Magallan, the Excelsior, and a Galaxy class (not posted) were created using this tedious process.

Then I ran into the SFC3 community, who has a huge collection of great ship models that were already game optimized (much better then I could do, for sure). I’ve extracted these ships from the SFC3 mod packages, made small adjustments and cleanup to the mesh, changed some textures, and applied a lighting pass in 3ds max. I’ve created a new set of textures for each ship (the composite of the old textures, and the lighting solution) and applied this new texture to the ship hulls. I then do a little tweaking to the map channels and disable the polygon shading. I then export as an X file, add a “_L” to the filename of all outputted textures, test in game, change some more lighting, test again, and then post here. I still need to finalize all the mount points on each model so they will act like standard GalCiv2 hulls (I’ve only added one or two mounts per model so far, just for testing).

I still need to come up with an elegant method of getting these models into the game as a proper mod, but I’ll figure something out.

So, by nature, I am not a game modeler, thus I would not be the best choice for someone like StarDock to hire as a model maker. Thanks for the thought though. : )

I hope this clears everything up, and I hope everyone is going to enjoy the work once the thing is finished. A lot of time goes into these.

Cheers!

I don't get it, why not release ships individualy or in a big pack instead of waiting for a full featured mod?
Dude, I have GOT to have all of these. Hurry up 1.2!
Whether or not you find an elegant way to implement it as a mod, I would also like just the .x and ,png files also, if possible. I don't mind adding a few lines to the GC2Types.xml file to use them.
Agreed. I voted to have all these ships in "mod" form but that's just a personal preference. I can just as easily swing the "manual" method as well.
The thing is, I don't want a mod that only works for the Terran's, since I always play as my custom race, the Meese.
So I need the hulls to have S99 as the race designation so it does not matter which hull style I happen to choose.

I actually prefer the manual method of adding basic hulls into the GC2Types.xml file.

These hulls look fantastic, and I can't wait to implement them as a sixth hull style (or if that's not possible, then just as the generic style I suppose).

I am wondering, however, if you plan to take various parts of the models (the nacelles, saucers, etc.) and release them as jewelry. Well, provided that's feasible/practical with these models, of course.

Additionally, would I be right to remember you saying somewhere that you're only doing Federation ships, and not any other races? Either way, you're the man, of course; I'm just wondering.

Thanks in advance.

Moosetek13, i think i will implement the ships as the terran hull type, but you can still play as a custom race no problem. Just choose terran as your hull style.

Ahzi Dahaka. No I don’t think that I will do it that way. Started a new business the other week, and I really have no time at all anymore : ( hopefully I can get the current mod finished.
