Suggestion: Race specific military ratings

By only major gripe with this game is the military rating. It continues to play havoc with good games. In a recent game on Painful, the Alterians had a military rating of 185 vs my rating of 85 and declared war. But the AI didn't seem to notice that since we were the two major players, all my defenses were set to counter his. I had driver weapons and shields defenses. He had beam weapons and shield defenses. In the war that followed, he lost 170 ships, I lost 2. By the end, he had developed some armor, but by then he didn't have enough planets to produce them in mass. Since I didn't have to produce more ships, I could produce transports in mass. I think I took 8 planets in the first 6 weeks. Within 25 weeks he surrendered (to me oddly enough).

While the military rating is important, unlike tech or economy, it's relative to the race you're looking at. I would like to see implemented a way for the AI to look at it's relative strength when looking who to pick on to keep itself from doing really dumb things like it tried in my last game.

BTW, I was trying for a tech victory and was happy to just sit back and grow/research.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the AI's evaluation of relative military strength is up for a revamp in 1.2. I can only guess that is referring to what weapons/defenses each race has.

They also stated that in 1.11 the military rating would be more reflective of what your actual rating should be. I think it still needs some work as my fewer ships are rated lower but every war I end up destroying the opponent. I think the game has to also look at size of ship as well as the techs involved. Bigger ships with good tech are more likely to survive. I generally have very few ships but they have good attack and great defence. I can have 1 ship take out a fleet out 14 or 15. They just can't hurt my ships. If this is the case then why I there number of ships rated better. I think this needs to be looked at.

The AI should look at the same graphs that I do when deciding when to go to war. I always check the number of planets, Compare his tech level to mine, compare his economy to mine, compare his production ability to mine. Does the AI not look at these values as well? I think military rating should be a combined calculation of all these things and not just the number and strength of ships you have. I have the same issue as everyone else. I don't really build my military until I need it, so it looks like I'm weak. Kinda like an ambush I guess.

No, I think military rating should just rate your fleets, but the AI decisions should depend on military rating as well as industrial and economical rating. Maybe you ment the same, maybe not, but I like to see a seperate military statistic.

Military rating are still mainly a numbers game. In my last game I had (bonus boosted) fleets with over 500 attack and over 200 defense while the right at my heels Drengi had no fleet with over 60-70 attack and not much defense at all.

I definitely agree with the original poster, I've been thinking this for a while. How good someone else's military is depends on who you are, and how your weapons and defenses match up.
