Can no longer save

Downloaded new update

The problem is simply this: with the latest version of the beta, my save times are enormous... for example, I used quick save on the first turn, waited ten minutes, took a SHOWER, came back at least fifteen minutes later, and it was STILL saving. I tried remedying this by reinstalling a game, and did an experiment; if I save in the exact same way for the original version... saving is fine. However, once I reupdated the game, the long save returned. Have any ideas on how to fix this? Pretty much makes my game unplayable. (Or if not, how can I play in a previous version of the game, like from a week before since that was working fine?)

... then after about forty minutes I just went ahead and used "control alt delete" to get out of the game; are there reprecussion from doing this? Thanks.

Bump. At this point, I'm thinking of just uninstalling the game again and reverting to 1.0x. Can I do this without uninstalling?

Similar problems here too. I've just installed the 1.1 patch via Stardock and can no longer save without the program freezing up entirely on the "Saving Progress" screen. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del out and manually quit the non-responding GalCiv2 from within Windows Task Manager.

I have the same problem as well, can't save or load at all!

Same problem here, I'm pissed. Galciv was working fine at 1.0x until the update to 1.1 and now the game freezes whenever I try to save or restore. I need to alt-ctrl-del or power cycle to recover!

Is this occuring only under the condition that you attempt to save the game or also when it tries to autosave?

If it is only happening when you try to save it and not when the compiter is trying to save it automatically, please review next question.

Is it hanging when creating a NEW saved file (not replacing an older one), or just when there is a previous save there with the same name?

I would check myself, but i dont have GC2 installed on this laptop.

And is it only with the gigantic maps? I just finished a game using the new 1.1 on the huge map with no problems.
Well, it is not a problem everyone has anyway. I just started a new game on the gigantic map with all the races, myself as custom. I had no problem with either saves or quick saves.

Well, I went back to 1.0x, it worked fine, and then to 1.1... and it was broken again... though it worked a few times...
Seems it just gets really slow every time it saves... I've seen it done during quick save, autosaves, and manual saves... so anyway to get back to 1.0x from 1.1?

Zak, I just went back and tried some different map sizes. (I made both New "Custom Named" Saves and Quick Saves on first turn of each new game).

For me, the game only freezes when using Gigantic maps in the 1.1 version (worked fine before the patch).

When I tried a Huge Map, there was a large delay on the first save attempt. I thought the game had frozen again, but I couldn't Ctrl+Alt+Del out to check if it was not responding. Fortunately though, it eventually saved and returned me to the game. When I attempted another save straight after, it did it with no delay at all - strange!

I have the same problem. This annoying issue started with tha last beta of 1.1 for me...

The "save" issue for 1.1 is being reported in a few different threads. I, too, prefer playing on the gigantic map with as many races as possible. My first attempted game I saved after a few turns -- every menu choice seems to be taking longer than normal. It saved O.K. as far as I could tell. However, when trying to load the saved game -- gigantic map -- the game locked up. It remained non-responsive, even using Windows to try to shut it down.

I followed the advice here, and from other threads, and started a huge map. Everything works as it should. Therefore, it does seem there is something not working correctly with the gigantic map setting, especially if maximum races are chosen. I also leave stars, planets, anomolies at "common." (I enjoy exploration!)

Does anyone at Stardock have a suggestion about the gigantic map issue? I really prefer the biggest galaxy possible. Thanks!

fyi:I am seeing this save/reload problem playing gigantic maps with max opponents. Under 1.0x I did not have a problem saving/loading, only under 1.1. Haven't tried a huge map yet.
I have tried using the gigantic map also. But I have seen no problems yet with the release 1.1.

In fact, it had been rock stable. I have had zero errors so far, which is a first. With all the other versions it would crash every so often, usually after repeated Control-N's trying to find just the right home planet.

I wonder if the release is handling memory any differently. I have 3GB on this machine, and at least some of the posts are from people with 512MB saying they are fetting memory errors.

Maybe you should all up your ram to the 2-3GB level and see if that helpls. lol

I tried again with a huge map.

Same problem. I wish a Stardock employee would help with this thread...

Same problem with Gigantic maps, Game freezes when it autosaves. Rebooting computer and then starting that saved game does not help either, just causes a CTD again.

Same pronblem with german version and last update
Reply #19 Top
same here, but with large maps and only with the first autosave, waited 7 min and then it continued....

If you guys have a secondary hard drive, moving your pagefile to that drive and setting it to the maximum allowable size covers a multitude of memory-hogging sins. I have minimal system memory, but my virtual memory is set as I described, and my gigantic map, bring-every-race-to-the-party games will save and load, eventually. My hard drives thrash like a wounded animal, though
