Military Starbase

Are military starbases good for anything compared to economy and influence bases?

Better. They had to nerf military starbases in beta 4.

They have a very specific role - to enhance combat starships within there area of effect. A military starbase in non-contested territory is precisely as useful as an economy starbase with no friendly planets in its area of effect. But when on the borders or around contested worlds - they can turn the tide of any battle, especialy if you overlap their areas of effect.

In addition to tense borders, I like to ensure that my key worlds have a nearby military starbase. If it saves your butt just once, it's worth it. Sometimes, when there's a lot going on, it can be easy to miss an invading fleet that's making a dive straight for your manufacturing capital or whatever. Nice to have a military starbase there to bolster your ships.

Build one with as many ship assist modules as you can put on, then fight a battle under its protection. It adds incredible firepower and defenses to your ships. I once slaughtered a huge armada of Drengin and Arcean battleships/frigates with nothing but fighters. That was before any of the betas came out, so I don't know if it still has the same power.

@ Inept...

I usually launch scouts from my colonies and put them on guard duty during a war. Keeps anyone from sneaking up on you.
