Why do the core designs suck so hard?

I mean compared to what a person can build in the ship builder, a fleet of 6 or 7 core design ships couldn't take out 1 good user made ship.

It's because the core design ships are static, always the same. They will be just as good as ships you can build only if you have exactly the right tech levels in all areas to build them -- but that doesn't ever actually happen. By the time you have the tech for the ship's weapons, for example, you could be way ahead in miniturization, and so the static design is no good for you.

To encourage you to design your own ships?

While I haven't read every single post in the forum (impossible anymore), I vaguely remember a brief reference to an argument about ship building even being in the game. If that's correct, they could have set it up to "encourage" (with lots of negative reinforcemet) use of the designer so every aspect of the game would be used. I don't believe Stardock expected the designer to be any where near as popular as it is.

I'm sure there's some who's preference would be to ignore the designer...and I hope the few seconds it takes to slap on the latest weapons and engines onto a hull doesn't irritate them too much. Still, when you consider the different way's people will research techs; creating cookie cutter ships for every possible tech combination....or...Frogboy creating another ai to design player ships, it just much easier (and fun) to create your own.

Also i've notice that a core design ship would cost X amount and designing your own ship of the same hull with better weapons, defences, modules etc. can sometimes cost less. This could also encourage people to use the designer.

Man, I could just tweak round in the ship designer all day... Love building these things. My only beef is about the near-useless stock ships taking up a lot of really good names. Oh whell... Can't have "Sniper", I'll have the "DC Sniper" ,much harder to catch (Yes that was horrible )

I have at least one GC2-playing friend who simply doesn't care to use the designer at all. He uses the core ships exclusively, and is apparently quite satisfied with them. I personally agree with the OP, but I wanted to make the point that some people -- and he's no casual gamer -- get along just fine with the core designs.
