Can someone please help?

Okay i'm a massive fan of Gal Civ 1, so naturally i was hugely exited when i found out about Gal Civ 2. Yesterday i finally bought the game, got it home, installed it, and to my dissmay it doesn't work. Now i get the following message:

"GalCiv 2 v1.0: galciv2.exe referenced memory at "0xfefffff8". The memory could not be read"

I have also read the readme provided with the game and here are the specs for my graphics card and driver, taken straight from Direct X diagnostic.

Name: RADEON 9800 SE Family (Microsoft corporation)
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc
Chip type: U1 AGP (0x4336)
DAC type: Internal DAC (400 Mhz)
Approx total memory: 32.0 MB
Current display mode: 1024 x 768 (16 bit) (60 Hz)

Please help i really want to get playing, and if you need any more info about my laptop in order to find the problem please ask.

Depending on how far GC2 got trying to start up before it threw that error, there should be a debug.err file in the directory where you installed it at. Post the contents of that file, if any, and that will give us more info to go on.

The first time i tried playing the game there was no error, it played the into and froze when the actual game should have started, now however it doesn't even start playing the intro, I'l try and find the debug.err file though I'm not good at computers so i might be a while lol.

You sure? It's rare for it not to show. My computer, Main drive (ie, c, g, i etc) and it's a .CRA file.

First thing that poped out at me was
"Current display mode: 1024 x 768 (16 bit) (60 Hz)"

According to the readme file, 16 bit won't cut it. it requires the desktop to be running in 32 bit mode.

See if correcting that will fix it.

edit: I thought the .cra files were created by Smart Exception. The game afaik does the debug.err, but I think it does need to load first, as it is created when you "exit" the game.

Why would you use 16bit? doesnt every monitor thats 1024x768 have 32 bit? Silly.

Yeh lol i realised that and changed to 32, now it plays the intro and everything, but the screen stays black when the game options should come up. However the music still plays.

Post your debug.err log found in the main game folder. Thanks!

Thanks for your help guys but I've sorted the problem. It was my video card driver and an upgrade made the game run perfectly, no problems at all with it and a tremendous amont of fun. It really is a fantastic game, many thanks to the developers of course, and people here for help.
