A Real Upgrade Ship Bug! 1.1beta3

If you build a new ship, components take up that correct size they are supposed to. Now upgrade a ship, any ship, the components only take up 1/2 of the space they are supposed to!!

Nope, can't reproduce that in my game. Are you doing anything else?

Just to make sure these ships your upgading are of the same hull size of the new ship you just made right? Because some component sizes change with hull size.

I'm running windows 2000, FX5700 graphics card...
Custom race (my race file below):

Yes, same hull. Just re-add the components after clicking 'upgrade'. The basic lifesuppot was taking 2 spaces instead of 4, the ion engines were taking 4 spaces instead of 8. I made some awesome beginner ships like this, but it takes all the fun out of the game.

Are you giving your custom race a huge miniaturization bonus? That will do it...

CLARIFICATION: If you upgrade one of the PREMADE ships that come with the game, this effect happens. Example: select the original colony ship, hit upgrade, add components, viola, they take up 1/2 the space they should. This does not happen when upgrading 'user made' ships.

I'm looking at the upgraded colony ship (Which I called Colony Ship II). I got 5 ion drives, 1 colony module, and 4 basiclifesupport devices on the 'cargohull0' ship.

What? You cant upgrade core ships!

I know, the upgrade button used to be grey until I upgraded to beta3!! Now I can click 'upgrade' on the core ships in the game. Wierd, but I can! OK, so I just started a 'new' game using the terrain alliance in a tiny universe. I immediately went to the ship designer, for the ORIGINAL PREMADE SHIPS, I have all 4 buttons available: upgrade, delete, obsolete, and new. When I click on 'upgrade' it lets me upgrade, but the components take up the correct size this time. THEN, I used the terrian alliance again, but chose the 'TORIAN' ship style. Now not only can I edit the core ships, but the components I add are 1/2 the size. I've got this nailed down now. Sorry for testing while posting.

No it's not that, it was something they probably meant to have in the original game but couldn't get done in time or something. I've not seen it, but it's commented on somewhere in the bugs/fixes thread that's over 11 pages long near the beginning, and they added it in to the betas of 1.1. Frankly it's a good thing because it means that us don't have to make completely new designs for the core ships as newer items become available, just upgrade the existing designs.

Then the real problem is that the TORIAN ship's components are 1/2 the size they should be when upgrading the 'core' ships.

ANOTHER OBSERVATION: It seems to only happen with the Cargo Hull that the original Colony Ship uses (Torian Style).

Next time please get more information about the bug. Posting 'there is a bug in the game' doesnt help.
Step 2, take a breath calm down, and use proper grammer. It is very hard to read your posts, no offence if this isnt your first languege, you rock your better then most americans.

I tried to recreate what you describe and the bug did not surface.

My grammar was flawless in my first post, however, I meant to type 'the' instead of 'that' when I wrote "...components take up that correct size...". I can't believe I'm even going to say this, but there is an apostrophe in "doesnt" and "isnt". Also, "offence" should be 'offense', "languege" should be 'language', "your" should have been 'you're' (as in ownership), and to top it off, your last sentence is a run-on sentence.

Let's not get into a grammar debate here, please...I had enough nightmares about English in school. *cackle*

Anyway, I'll need to try and recreate this bug myself to see for myself what goes on...it sounds like a pretty serious sort of bug.

Have you tried doing this kind of upgrade right at the start of the game to see what happens? It could be that cumulative miniaturization bonuses have changed the size calculations...on the other hand, the components may have been "hard-wired" in a way...

Also...this may be a bit of a nitpick, but "offence" is the British term for "offense," so technically it is correct...just for a different part of English. *chuckle*

I can reproduce this bug on machine before even generating 1 turn in a new game. Only with the torian cargo hull (there are 2 hulls, but only 1 has this bug) that the 'core' cargo ship uses.

I've been seeing similar behavior under 1.0X, 1.1 Beta 1 & 2 (and probably 3, though I since stopped using upgrade, I can't say for sure).

What I've seen is that from time to time, on certain ship upgrades and not just core (which I understand are upgradeable under beta 3), the components are cheaper to add than if you do a new ship from scratch. The savings varies, and is usually rather small (I would bet that many users have encountered this without noticing). However once I did see a savings big enough on a large hull to get in 1-2 extra force shields, and an extra psionic missle battery. I've got save game files where this is 100% repeatable, if anyone at Stardock cares, I'd be happy to send it in.

In order to avoid this bug, I stopped using upgrade (which doesn't save me much work anyhow, since the interface is somewhat borked).

Edit: I should also note that I am seeing this bug using a custom race, so it is not specific to the Torian setup or to using core ships.
