Help with Modding Races

RaceConfig.xml and MapRaceInfo.xml

Hi guys.

I have recently been exploring modding GC 2 slightly to change the Race Names, Leader Names, System and Planet names of the Major Civilizations and the Minor Civilizations included in the RaceConfig.xml.

Because I dont particularily like many of the names in GC and GC2 - however where in GC you could change the name manually in game for ALL races, you can not do this in GC2 which is most annoying...

This is what I changed below:-

And heres what ive changed in the MapRaceInfo.xml:-

Only what ive changed in the MapRaceInfo.xml appears to have changed in game - so what do I get to get the game to register whats in the RaceConfig.xml?

What have i missed?

Sorry this isn't working for me either.

I read a thread where supposedly we could add races to the xml file and they would appear, provided they had custom planets designed also but i've not seen one appear yet. Even using the control+shift+D cheat.

Anyone got any idea's?

Well I seem to have got it sort of working...

By adding the changed information into the CustomPlanets.xml also...

But now I find that the changed info for the Minors - like the Snathi appears now but not correctly.
For Example the star is called Snathi Hegemony instead of Regulus and the home world called Snathi Hegemony I instead of Snathis...

Im definately confused - there must be something we are doing wrong I guess...

Perhaps the limit of races is fixed and we have to delete a race for others to appear?

Also where are races like the Furan listed and the others that enter with control alt + D, perhaps they are hardcoded?

I am going to poke around in the exe if nobody has any luck, maybe i'll find something there.

I ran into the same troubles, this whole area is not "very modable". Is there some trick or was such a desireable moding area overlooked? I hope someone fixes this soon, or tells us how to do it. Also remove all elements from hardcoding that should be modable such as pirates, some of the events (finding ships, minor races spawning, reproduction increase, speed increases, so on so forth), the minor races that are in there (these include the fundamentalists, vegans, furon, paradians, arvantians, venge, jarkians, and major race offshoots as well as the idenpendants). These are key elements to a "very modable game". KEY!

I completely agree with that.

GC2 was supposed to be a lot more moddable than GC and it doesnt appear to be at all.

Also I was wondering why only some of the Minor Races appear in the RaceConfig.xml and not the others?

While GC and GC2 has a profound comedic element to it - which is fun, I dont really like that a lot of the names for things like Races both Major and Minor, Leaders, Star Systems etc are completely unrealistic and in some cases positively absurd.
For example the Scottlingas are a race with long tentacles coming out of their neck and they have slimey looking skin; I highly doubt their leader would have a name like Walter Montgomery a clearly Human Name...

I really wish someone with more than half a clue (ie someone more familiar with modding the game than I) would respond to this post.

Im still having the weird Minor Race Problem I noted above - where the stars and planets appear the same as the name of the race which is highly stupid. Is this hardcoded?

And after 22 days there is still no reply...

Jeez this is supposed to be the more active forum; and yet no one seems to be around...

It's definitely moddable. I've done it. I dont see minors as being KEY to anything but they do add some flavor. If you require assistance in modding I'd say wait for release of version 1.2 where we get some documentation and support on how its supposed to work, right now its a lot of trial and error though the mod folder works.

Perhaps the limit of races is fixed and we have to delete a race for others to appear?

Yup. Or rewrite them minors.
