Tired of reloading same Beta-2 files

SDC's AI not set to "Intelligent" or greater

Ok its bad enough that I cant download the Beta 2 patch files on my laptop at work on high speed connection, even with SDC installed on it. SDC only lets you install the patch, not download and save. My laptop wont run GCII, and SDC wont even attempt to load the files on it. So I am forced to use my crappy dial up at home, meaning about a 4-5 hour download. Problem is I lose connection after only 20-40% done. When I restore connection, SDC wont resume download. When I start install again SDC starts over reloading same files. I have settings in SDC to resume download and not delete on cancel, but it still starts over. The files are still there in temp folder I've seen them but SDC still mindlessly downloads shipcfgs and explosions and files that it has loaded 5 times now!!!!

Sorry just had to vent. I do really like the changes in the Beta 1. It's been running pretty good for me and what few crashes I've had seem to have been addressed from the release notes I've read. Now If I could only get that patch loaded.... Now at 6% loading Exp_01.png for 5th time...

do you mean you can't download GC2 on your laptop? (the base game, not the multimedia and other things)

My laptop only has 16 meg video, I didnt even attempt to install

Even if I did have it installed and it would run, I wouldn't be able to easily transfer the files. Just wish you could use SDC to download a ZIP or whatever so you could transfer it to another computer

Can't you use SDC to "back up" or archive your installation from your work computer, then burn that to a CD and un pack it on your home computer? I haven't tried it (haven't needed to), but I believe that is how the system is suppose to work.

That should work, yes.

You could do something like that: there is an archive feature in SDC So you can install the game on your laptop through SDC, archive it and then move the archive to the other computer and use SDC to restore the archive.

Yeah I was just thinking about seeing if it would install, and just never trying to run it, just let SDC see that it was there. Worth a shot. Does the installer do a system check I wonder? Dont know where one of the install CD's is, but I guess I could just download it again. Unfortunately I only have internet access on nights I DJ and wont be doing that till weekend. Maybe this time the gods of dial up will let my connection stay up....

13% Exp_06.png yee ha!!

But still my main gripe is that SDC wont look on my hard drive and see that all these files are already there. In options I have it checked to resume partially downloaded files and I have unchecked delete file on cancel. Is there some other option I'm missing. I didnt have those set first couple times then I I found them and set them but it still wont pick up where it left off

You can archive the installer? I wish I'd known that. Even over DSL it takes forever to download.

About your dialup, you could be running up against a time limit. Most ISPs will cut your dialup connection every 5 or 6 hours regardless of whether or not you're using it. It lets them oversell their server modems. British Telecom will do it every TWO hours.

It's also false advertising, because they claim "unlimited access", but that's a gripe for a different place.

When you go to SDC and see the option install right click on the topic (name of the game) and a menu opens select archive application and then select download and archive, this will not install the game but it will give you and .exe file that you can burn into a CD and then install later.

Well that time it got to 40% before I lost connection, and I watched SDC timeout before I could get connection re-established and I finally realized how to deal with it. SDC default setting is 3 second between retries and only 5 or so retry attempts. I set it so there is 60 seconds between tries and 500 retries before SDC cancels. Went to sleep and it had lost connection at 24% but SDC was still trying to connect when I got back to computer and it did once I got dial-up back.

Yes mine does that too if connection is idle, but it pops up a window and beeps computer if you are in another window and gives you a minute to tell it to stay connected. On these disconnects it just pops up a window saying connection lost

Thanks everyone for your help! Now at 41% finally getting new files w00t!

On which server are you trying to download the files? (tools -> settings -> internet)
