Diplomacy Question - Militaristic Penalty

How do I avoid getting diplomatically penalised for being militaristic?

The AI often claims that I am militaristic before I even build my first military unit! Is it because I am building too many colony ships or is it from colonizing worlds in other civs influence? Or something else?

This lead to a rather unfortunate game where I attempted a diplomatic victory with the Alterans, only to get :
-militaristic, -moral alignment, --military strength, -close borders, -influence. All from the first 10-20 turns or so.

Needless to say, that game didn't go so well...

I'm pretty sure militaristic means he is militaristic, you can see this in one of the racial/culture reports during the diplomatic "speak to" talks. It'll say, they are moderately militaristic or something like that. Another words, it's not you ^_^;;

BTW, it might be wise to build some military ships to "look" like you have a chance against them. It dooesn't matter how 'nice' you are, if you look like a baby with lots of candies, they will come and take it. If you want to avoid trouble, build a spin control center, and a omega defense system on one planet, and then shove your best ships into orbit. That should make them think you have some teeth. It also helps to trade with them to get that extra positive.

Yeah, originally I thought it was -them- who were militaristic, but when I went and had a look at all of the civs against me, they all had the militaristic penalty. Why would they make 'militaristic' a diplomatic catagory if everyone automatically has it? And it wasn't just because my military was weak. I get the penalty even when I am rampaging across the galaxy (i.e. when *I* am being militaristic).

Yeah, militeristic means he is. But, colony ships add military might, which is because the AI values amount of ships too much.
Close borders, is obvious. Your planets next to them. and they think you're puny, and wish to crush you

I don't know that it's a very critical issue either way because I've been viewed as militaristic by other races (And I am, very much so...) but eventually gone on to ally with some on the grounds of other, overwhelmingly positive attributes.

I wonder if starbases contribute to being called militaristic because in a real-world sense it could legitimately be seen as such if a neighboring country is building all sorts of large installations inside its borders or near other nations.

I'm pretty sure it's them who's militaristic, not you. Presumably it's randomly determined each game which races are militaristic and which ones aren't, so if all of your opponents are militaristic then you've just been unlucky.

Militaristic means they are.

This means it damages your chances of peace with them slightly because they want to fight all the time. So yes its nothing to do with you and you cannot do anything about it. Only deter them by being nice and trading or being strong to put them off the attack.

I thought it ment the player was Militaristic,and the A.I don't like that ?

Militeristic also seems to come out when there is a large disparity between your military strenght and theirs.
