carry over ship designs?

Hi, I'm pretty new to this game but am loving it! Nywayz, I designed these cool ships for my custom race...and when I tried to use them again in the next game....well, I couldn't. I put all these high tech things on them in the old game...so I have to research all those before I can use my designs again. I tried solving this by saving my designs without any weaponry etc. So in theory they should have been available right from the get go. This is not the case. Is this a bug? Or is it simply not allowed to carry over ship designs?

are you using the same race? and is the hull requirement meet? (Mid, Large, Huge Hull are tech that need to be researched)

Yes, I always play with the same custom race. I get my medium, large and huge designs as soon as I research the corresponding hulls. But I don't get my tiny and small hules even after I researched the corresponding hulls
