Can not create attack ships

can only build Defenders

I'm brand new to the GalCiv II series and have been playing for less than a week now.....First I must say that it's a really terrific Turn-based strategy game, I would rank it right up there with Civ IV.
I am still going through the learning curve...... getting the feel for the different types of strategies that can be applied.....At this point I have many questions that I would like to get resolved, but one that stands out at the moment is....
I'm have difficulty building any type of military spacecraft other than Defenders.... I have played with a strategy to win by other than military aggression and won my 2nd match ( all though it was on the beginner difficulity) through diplomacy and cultrial development......In the next few game at a higher difficulty the game AI seems to let the other races have more of an atvantage and I find myself being attacked in the later stages.
I try to develope a mix of techs to get a better balance throughout the game, but for what ever reason I haven't been able to build any military ships other than defenders....So it's a no contest when engaging the enemy in battle...I get my but kicked as all the others races seem to have heavily upgraded fighters and weapons......
Am I not developing certain Weapons & Defense Techs earily on in the game ?....

There are a handful of pre-designed ships in the game, but you really need to design your own with the shipyard if you want ships. I assume you have not done that?

I think it would be a really hardcore challenge to try to beat the game without designing your own ships.

Right from the first turn you want to get in there and design some ships.

Take a cargo hull, pretty it up some, put a few engines and a load of sensors on it - Scout Mark 1

Redesign an initial starting Colony ship with an extra engine to grab those nearby worlds. If you are playing on gigantic, you will need a load of different Colony ships to deal with range as well. Speed is definitely the key to Colony ships though so make sure you put new engines on them.

I personally redesign my defender - it tends to be a ship you have a lot of, so I want one that looks good. You can get a tiny hull with 2 beam for the same maintenance as a standard Defender.

There are a lot of ships you can specialise to a certain end. Don't rely on the few core ships to pull you through!

Thanks guys I had no idea about the ship builder feature.....I thought that the tech trees would open up the options needed to upgrade to new combat vessels.....I'll give the ship builder a try and let you know........
