This is rediculous II

Galactic Civ I was one of the best games I had ever played. I purchased GC II online betting that the quality would repeat. 2 patches later... and still I cannot finish a game without crashes or sloppy bugs. When I do finally get through a game, it only lets me post the results to the metaverse 50% of the time. There are 23 screens of bugs. There are posts within these pages containing dozens of 'glitches'. The Patches are called 'D' and 'X', not .02 and .03. This is epidemic. I am certainly not calling for anything other than Star Dock to fix it. But feel free to add your 'same here' should you be as frustrated as I am.

I've had problems with Nvidia drivers in the past.(even using the most updated drivers) on other games that is. That's why I switched to using other drivers. You could give these drivers a try http://www.driverheavendownloads.net/zeropoint.htm

Also, there was a guy having problems because his sound card drivers were old. I have the same realtek sound as you and there is a newer driver for it than the one you are using. Also, I think your metaverse posting failures are a seperate issue from any graphical problems you are having. Could you clarify what exactly are your graphic problems?

Debug Message: Could not find a TGN Serial No.

I wonder what this is... If it's what I think it is, then there's another problem...

I've also used these drivers in the past, and tend to find them to be quite solid. In fact, one of my PC's runs this game flawlessly on an elderly FX5200 AGP 128 MB using alternative drivers. Highly recommended.

"rediculous II" sounds like the name of a planet - I may have to use that in my next game.

Have you updated your motherboard drivers, you can get them from nvidia to (if it is an nvidia nforce motherboard ,latest is 6,70)
AND if that dosen't work you can get some drivers from AMD here (AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.2) Link

Regarding the error flipping to the buffer, that sounds like a DirectX error - the functional way graphics works under DirectX is that you "draw" on the back buffer while the primary buffer is being displayed, and then you "flip" which buffer is which. I doubt that would cause problems with loss of data to the Metaverse, but it could certainly crash the program or cause it to abort some sequence if error-checking code traps it. I obviously haven't seen GC2's code, but generally that's what I would expect from the description of the error.

"Rediculous" = Ridiculous, sorry somebody had to correct this. It makes you a little more credible when you can spell out your complaints correctly . I wouldn't say I'm frustrated because I'm very pleased with the game and the way it plays. I'm just a little annoyed by a few minor bugs which I fully expect to be corrected as stated by Stardock in due time.

OMG yet another whiner with old drivers.. sheesh.

BTW NVIDIA HAS RELEASED BRAND SPANKING NEW DRIVERS TODAY, GET IT.

My post about old drivers was not meant to say that "newer drivers suck, stick with old". Im saying *in my situation* the old drivers are superior in every single game I play, both in stability and performance. When I was crashing with GalCiv 2 constantly, I didnt hesitate to update the drivers to try and diagnose the problem. When I found that it *wasn't* the drivers and related to a reproducable ship auto-pilot bug, running Civ 4 and HL2 games at 40% decrease in frame rates was rather annoying, as well as the memory sucking catalyst control center.

Performance means nothing unless you can actually RUN the game you are trying to play. Older drivers are NEVER inherintly buggier than newer drivers. It depends on how gracefully old drivers handle new features and how well directx is implemented.

A game company issuing a proclamation that everyone should have the newest drivers is perfectly fine, the newest drivers are usually fairly stable in new games, as well as it is obviously the easiest recommendation to make.

Regarding 53. No, its not. At least, its not likely.
I don't have my TotalGaming.net number entered into this game, despite getting it with my totalgaming.net subscription. Due to inattention resulting from a shift in ISP and email providers, I did not notice my Stardock Account lapsing. While it did lapse, I still have the credits from earlier and I had the rights to the game (fell under the preorder category). So while I do not have an active TG serial number, I do have an official, authentic, GalCiv2 serial number. That number is in the game and the stardock software.

I renamed by debug file, and reran the game. I got this same debug message to.

Please don’t patronize me #50. They are named that way for a reason. There is a standard for issuing updates which this awesome game has neglected.

and it will take a few days for me to test it.

#52 thanx, I have just updated the realtek drives. Hope that helps too.
#56 the Mobo drivers are all good, thanx
#59, thanx for the input, but have not found anything to concur with your thoughts.
#60, I agree I should watch my spelling…but that does not correct the fundamentals.
#62, thanx, I understand that there are so many configurations of computers for Star Dock to consider… but that is there job.

I am starting a new game now.
No OC'ing, sound drivers are new, vid drivers are the new SLI compatible. I hope I can come here and say all you folks are right and that my words are mine to eat. Yet, I am no fool. (we shall see at least ) I will up date this thread once done.

Great, hope everything works for you now. Going to go have to see if there are new drivers for my card now.

EDIT: There are new nvidia drivers now...

Version: 84.21
Release Date: March 17, 2006

quick note...got new SLI drivers recommended above... work really well. But not for GCII... I still have thoughts that the problem is not vid...

Once again for the people that wish to abuse me... read my posts... I am not knocking the game. I am not knocking Star Dock. I LOVE the game. I HATE the BUGS. If someone bought this game without internet access they would be buggered.

No, but if you've got an unexplained problem and an old driver... it's probably best to look into updating that before making accusations about the quality of software you are running on your unupdated machine.

QFT, how else do you expect to debug the problem if you don't eliminate everything that is potentially a problem.
