Planet tile strategy

Planet tiles: Area effects for placement of structures on planets. Right now, the only strategy involved with the placement of structures on planets are the bonus tiles. It might be cool to get bonuses say, for example, if you have research centers placed to one another. I'm sure this has already been thought of though!

Well, there is nothing wrong with your idea but there is more startegy to tile usage than using bonus squares.

How do I specialize this planet?
How many factories should I build?
Do I need more than one factory or trade center on a reasearch planet?
Is an influence planet possible and advisable?
Where should I build my mfg, econ, and research capitals?

Lots of choices.

Don't forget the political capital and the home world. Your home world gets bonuses too. Has anyone tried moving the home world? There is an option for it in the Planet Details screen.

True but there is no strategy to the placement of such items in a particular tile other than the bonus tiles.

I think it would be cool :
* Farms are penalized if next to factories/Spaceport
* Adjacent Research labs give bonuses
* Capitols CAN'T be near factories/labs, etc
* Entertainment centers get penalized when adjacent (best spread out)

etc.

The location of tiles on a planet would be just as valuable as the bonus squares. Planning EARLY would reduce the amount of demolishing required later.

Hmmm. Sounds like unnecessary complication to me. I mean, the research centers can just use the internet can't they? There is already so much strategy going into building improvements that this seems to me more complicated than fun or beneficial to the game.

Yeah, since the tile placements are based on some kind of randomization over the land area of a few "planet maps",
then you have to consider getting a "bad planet" in its mapping ........
definitely overcomplicating things...

keep it simple... or something

I'd have to agree with Excalidan, to be honest; I think that'd be a bit counter-intuitive and complex, particularly as the planet map doesn't seem (to me at least) to be a strict geographical map but rather more of a stylised one. Plus I've had a few planets where there's been green tiles in the middle of the ocean, which is a mite odd.
