Comment On GalCiv II's Music

Opera Music

I just want to comment on the music in GalCiv II. I really like the music in the main menu area because it has a human voice singing alongside the actual tune being played, and it really creates a good atmosphere. I'm just sorry there is no such "opera" singing while you are actually playing the game.

Has anyone here ever played "Heroes Of Might & Magic II: The Price Of Loyalty"? It's an old turn based strategy game. One of it's great features was that it allowed the user to set the in-game music to "opera". So instead of getting an ordinary midi, you got a proper tune which was supported by a human voice singing alongside. It was one of the best features of the game, in my humble opinion, and one of the great weaknesses of the subsequent HOMM games was that they cut out the opera music.

For some dumb reason, the number of games which have a human singing accompaniment can be counted on several fingers which is a crying shame... because compared to music an appropriate operatic accompaniment, the music of other games sounds incredibly flat.

And for a game like GalCiv II, I really think it would work really well if more opera singing was put in. Space is a big place, full of mystery and danger, and what better way to capture the soul of space exploration than opera? Just a shame it's only confined to the main title screen in the present version of the game.

Just some food for thought for the developers.
PS. I call it "opera music" because I don't what else to call a tune with an accompanying human voice which sings lyrics which sound nice but where the words are not intelligible (which is fine, because you want atmosphere, not a disco). So apologies in advance to any music afficionado's out there who are grinding their teeth with my potentially incorrect use of the term "opera" lol

Watch this space!! The original GC1 allowed for custom music to be played in-game. I beleive that this will be the case in GC2 as well once the mods folder is sorted.

Speak for youself, I wouldn't mind a disco

Opera is close enough, I think the actual term is "cantata", but don't quote me on it.

I do agree though that the opening song is better than the music in the game. I think I turned off the in game music almost immediately, though it doesn't seem to remember it. The setting saves, but it doesn't seem to be applied until I go into the menu and turn it down again.

I think "canta" that is Spanish for vocal. Anyway, a quick fix is to replace the current tunes with copies of your own (just rename them).

Speaking for myself, I use ethereal music from titles released by Projekt records. The immersion factor is boosted highly (Thought to self - Maybe Brad should work something out them for the X-pack score).

Actually, I find that music on the main menu rather annoying, I much prefer the in-game music, well I don't really like the in-game music either.

It's not that it's bad, it just doesn't suit my tastes, it's almost right, but I can't put my finger on why I don't like it. I think I'm just spoilt by some of the excellent music from X3.

I think it's great! Other human chorus title screen music include Halo and Deus Ex. Although GalCiv2 is definitely more Opera-ly.

Rome Total War (RTW) - has one that rocks to say the least. It almost puts me in mind of the sound track for the Ninth Gate movie done by Sumi Jo (a truely great opera singer).

What about the window cleaning game on the PS2 - George Formby 4tw.

Personally, as a Sigur Ros fan (a fan of post rock in general) I would be happier if cheap MIDI (the Altarian comms screen music makes kittens cry) had been ditched in favour of getting an inventive band to make some atmospheric sounds. Not traditional guitar music, I mean prog rock or experimental stuff.

Didn't Rick Wakeman play a part in the music for Homeworld? Not that I'm saying you'd have had to get someone as high profile as him. Maybe we could find a Vangelis tribute band?
