long range fast raiders

hi,

i have a special class of ships, originally named 'scouts'

it's a cargo hull fitted with several engines, a whole lot of sensors, some range support and one little laser. these scouts can then go behind enemy lines and destroy the AI's undefended starbases. i can also send these scouts into heavy trade traffic zones, destroy some freighters, then quickly pull out. it's fun, feels like futuristic piracy.

the only way my scouts get destroyed is if i make a mistake, or if the AI has their 'escort' class ships with a movement of 4 show up out of nowhere. although with the sensors, both of these cases are rare.

i don't really build a lot, just enough so the scout sensors can reveal the fog of war around my influence zone, and when war breaks out, I send a few out for raiding.

i'm wondering, does anyone else employ these kind of ships? and also, is it possible to get the AI to build these themselves, or at least figure out a good counter?

Well i tend to do then same thing except that i use Eyes Of The Universe galactic achievment.
It sets sensor radius to your all ships to 15 pc !!
So I use whole cargo space just for engines and one tiny weapon.

Seriously i think it is some kind of exploit as AI even on higher levels (i'm talking genius here) tends to completly neglect their ship speed. From my experience i noticed that they always install extacly one engine module per ship (transports, escorts etc being an exception, but they are also pretty slow).
Their warships are so ridicullously slow that it takes them serious amount of time from declaring a war to actually send in some ships

The way i see it, AI should build some Sensors ships, and lots of warships packed only with weapons and engines (and defenses too) rather than trying to make some superduper combo ships that have installed all sort of sensors, life extenders etc

I did the same tactic as well. I used it to disrupt trade routes. It had a laserV and 10 moves/turn. It was code named Raptor
