Errr, Alliances?

Where?

I was just wondering if you first had to gain a rather high disposition from your wouldbe ally to get the option to appear.

I've researched alliances and have a couple of races on "friendly", but no alliance option.

.....I could really do with A power block right about now

You need to get them to 'Close'.

(Hint) Wont happen unless you are trading with them as well!

Most of my victories have been alliance victories, but only in the sense that I crushed all the major powers militarily and the remaining few didn't wanna rumble with me. I have a hard time convincing fledgeling civ's to ally with me, in the begginning of the game. Can't seem to get them past friendly until I smash a few heads and build up my military substancially.

Giving gifts of technology works well most of the time. Just don't give them anything that you don't want used against you, in case the alliance becomes inconvenient. I find that giving one or two gifts per turn for a few turns usually does the trick. Having the highest military/pop/influence ratings don't hurt, either.

I've never been able to secure an alliance:
Trading the hell out of them
Giving them lots of tech & money
I have the second most powerful military
+ To diplomacy
But noone, ever, EVER gets above friendly with me... /sigh/

You want to get out of the boredom of a game? Ally with a minor race.

Problem solved.

OH boy... allying with a minor race... if you hold up your end of the bargain you're going to end up fighting with everyone in the galaxy.

Try this for kickers:
Once, I allied with the altarian and also the Torians. Altarians declare war on the Torian. The torians are stronger than me and my friends, so I refuse to help. Torians declare war on Altarians, so I agree to help them. Altarian's friends, the Arceans and Thalans, declare war on me and toria. Yor declares war on drengins, Torians enter the war with the Yor. The Korx decide to declare war on me, are declared war on by the torians.

At the same time the Draths were waging a war on all the little minor races and were getting beaten to death.

Basicaly, the whole place was a big giant war

I think allying should be easier. You should get the option after you reach warm I think. It's so easy to make enemies but so hard to make alliances. There should be times when getting an alliance would be easier. One such time is when you are both warring against the same Empire and are at good relations. I shouldn't have to give away all my tech and money to get an alliance with another empire, especially when I am the stronger empire. It makes no sense at all.

Our alliance with the Soviet Union in WW2 was decided because we had a common enemy not because we had some love relationship. It was beneficial to them and us so we allied. This is how alliances work in real life, we both have a common enemy or interest such as mutual high levels of trade. They can also be formed when we need to use each other's territory or pass through as if it was our own. I would like if the game followed this more realistic concept.

I was playing a game on challenging in a small universe. I was trading heavily with the Altarians, nearly 70% of my trade. I also had a strong military. Yet, I never saw my relations go above warm.

I saved and did a test. I gave them all my techs that they didn't have, which was about 10, and then gave them all my money which was about 8000. It went to about Friendly for one turn then went down the next turn... it's really silly at the moment.

Evil empires should be able to ally as well otherwise it's one sided.

They are able to ally, they just tend to backstab each other.
