Change Ship Design "Upgrade" to optionally keep non-jewelry components?

Change in lastest patch is a step backwards at times

I hate to be contrary, but I'm not so sure I like the new method of upgrades. Before when you selected "Upgrade" no components would be removed, but after the latest patch selecting "Upgrade" will remove all but the jewelry. Supposedly this was because some people had difficulties finding and removing the non-jewelry and the linear strip (below the 3D window) that displayed the actually components was somewhat erratic.

My problem is that sometimes I'm just doing an upgrade to, for instance, change out the engines to get more speed. I don't want to have to remember (or write down) what weapons and other components were on the ship so that I can re-add them as part of the upgrade. Getting the components wrong also adds to the cost when you upgrade one of your ships on the main map. Doing this "minor mod" was easy before, but now it's a longer process with more chance of error.

What I'd like is that when I select "Upgrade" a pop-up appears and asks "Keep existing non-jewelry components?". Answer yes and it works just like before the patch, answer no and it works like after the patch.

Just a thought

I don't like this change at all. It doesn't make much sense to me. If the problem is finding small parts among all your jewelry, then why not just add a button in the ship design ui to remove all non-jewelry pieces. You could even just change the way clear works to remove non-jewelry instead of adding a new button. I mean if you think of upgrading as oop inheritence, it's like all non-jewelry pieces are now private members instead of protected but jewelry pieces are still protected. Why split them up instead of just adding a function to remove non-jewelry on request? I personally haven't used much jewelry yet as it doesn't affect gameplay, so this change makes the upgrade feature nearly useless as it's just like starting a completely new design.

We plan to add a lot more goodies to the ship design screen so there are more options.

All we can do is have it behave in the way that annoys the fewest number of people.

I like using custom ships with lots of pieces, the new patch makes it much easier to upgrade so it's the lesser of 2 evils for me. But I see the posters point.

Honestly, I was able to work with it either way.

The old way of upgrading mostly just required adding a module back to the ship after removing that first piece. Then it seemed to be OK.

The new way makes certainly makes it easier to add all-new components, which is good too.

Thanks Brad. I didn't want to sound like a whiner, but this change really did make it more work to play the game well. Perhaps I have an unusual play style. I tend to incrementally upgrade a design as I get new components, so having to add back all the non-jewerly components each time is a nuisance.

I very much appreciate that you are making these changes . I know some people still are having problems but for me since 1.0D1 was released the game has been rock-solid, even on a gigantic map with nine major opponents. As you have mentioned in your journal I find myself playing most of the time zoomed out so that I can see the tactical symbols, but I can't resist zooming in so I can check out the new ships my opponents have built!

Yes, please add an option to leave non-jewelry components. I got bit by this last night when I wanted to upgrade all my ships with the latest Warp drive engines and it was a big hassle to remember/recreate all the various weapons, armor and life support that I had before.

For me its just the opposite, I don't have the newest patch. But when I choose to upgrade some of my custom ships, parts of it dissappear (or when I'm making it and saving the ship design, but mostly when I choose to upgrade it). Mostly its jewelry pieces, but its getting annoying as I can't have the ships designed how I want them. This mostly happens when I put alot of jewelry pieces on it and then add the major components. I change what I want to change, save it and when it asks to upgrade exsisting ships I either press Upgrade, or just cancel. Then I go to the Shipyard and check my designed ship, there are sometimes alot of jewelry pieces missing from it.
