Interface Woes

This is really starting to seem like hell. Nothing seems to work with the interface, from the simplest things on up. Tab key to go to next ship? Nope. Esc or Enter to close the current window? Heck no - in Ship Designer, I go to throw away changes, get the popup "You will lose any unsaved changes, do you wish to continue?" window. Escape key brings up the options screen, while the Enter key ... Ends the turn, instead of, as the manual says, "End Turn or close current Window".

Technically I suppose it does as described, it ends the turn - but it certainly doesn't close the current window, not any current window. Not the best user interface design, deciding that the SAME key either closes a window, OR ends the turn.

The middle mouse button - it's supposed to let you rotate the map, your view of ships in the ship designer. Doesn't do a bloody thing - I can zoom in / out with it since it's also the mouse wheel, but nothing else. Makes it difficult to get a proper view of the map or, especially, to place items on ship designs.

Since I'm not hearing tales of woe from everyone else, I'm starting to wonder if the installation didn't get totally screwed up (downloaded yesterday since Gamestop lost my pre-order, updated to the new V1.0X.1 patch). But since I don't have a CD, I can't try to reinstall without going through half a day redownloading. Sheesh.

In regards to the middle mouse button issue, what are your settings in Windows for the middle button? It has to be specifically set to "middle button" or your system's equivalent thereof for it to work. If you have it mapped to say, "double-click" or something it won't work, unfortunately.

You also should make sure you don't have another program open that could be "hogging" the middle mouse button. I've noticed that if I have my web browser open, for instance, the middle mouse button won't work in the game.

When the feature is working, you should be able to rotate things by moving the mouse while holding down the middle button.

Ah, thanks! I scratched my head a bit 'cause Windows (XP) doesn't have any settings for the middle mouse button, but tried Logitech's mouse configuration (for the first time) and now have middle-mouse capability, including rotation in GalCiv2

Gracias, Salamat, thank you!

De nada.

If it makes you feel any better, I also at first was scratching my head wondering why my middle mouse wheel button just wouldn't work in the game period, and ended up having to go and tinker around with it until I figured it out.

I agree with you on the "close the current window" thingie, that doesn't work and it's extremely annoying not to have those quick keys available.
