Multi-role vessels

How feasible is it to have a ship with multiple weapon systems (say lasers and missiles) and/or multiple defense systems. Does this prove particularly effective or is going down the one road more effective?

I use this once I have huge hulls. Before that I stick with one type weapon/defense per ship.

Stuff like miniaturization helps. I had several fleets of medium class ships with decent Phasor and Photon torpedo capacity, along with proper defensive modules.

Two weapons could be useful, if you can manage the research required. I would guess (although I've never tried) that the enemy usually can't- or won't- adapt to both because of the defenses having huge space requirements.

However, I wouldn't try it with anything less than Medium or Large Hulls, depending upon your miniaturization. Smaller ships are already strapped for space with just one weapon type. It seems to take me forever just to get out of the "1 Laser Gun and an Engine" stage if I'm not focusing on the weapons tree completely, let alone two weapons trees.

I thought as much - although if you have an ally learning the other tree I guess that would make matters less complicated
