Bug or Feature?

In the campaign the only weapon tech I can research is beam weapons and the only defense I can research is armor plating. This wouldn't be too irritating if the baddies weren't also using beam weapons, rendering my armor research nearly useless. I'm still early in the campaign (darned supply issues in my area) and I'm just curious if this is a deliberate limit to early campaign missions, or if we are intended to be able to use all weapons/armors from the start.

Cool, thanks for the info. Also a big yay that I got a reply for the post I made today. I posted about something else yesterday and never got a reply. I was starting to think I wasn't really real or something.

I think the logic is new players will start out with the campaign so let's present them with a limited tech tree with is easier to learn. Armor is not useless against beam weapons, just non-optimal. But since SQRT(1)=1, 1 Armor is the same as 1 Point Defense or 1 Shields against beam weapons. So, a ship with beam weapons 2 and armor 1 will usually beat a ship with beam weapons 3.

I agree with Mascrinthus. I think they're easing players into the tech tree with different scenarios in the campaign. It would be nice not to have to research all of the basic techs again considering the campaign is supposed to be an ongoing story. But I'll probably only play it the campaign once so it's not that big of a deal.

It's "Stream-Lined" for your benefit. Also, you get some techs so you don't totally start at the beginning. You're not limited you can go farther down the tech tree, but you're just not given the chance to research other defences.

Non-optimal, nearly useless, same thing. I didn't say fully useless, after all.
