It's raining class 12s

I was playing on a large map against all opponents at a normal difficulty level. I happened to be doing really well for myself and had just forced the Iconian refuge into giving me nearly all of their techs in exchange for peace (poor souls thought I'd be a push over when they declared war on me).

Then they discover an ancient artifact on one of their planets bordering my space. This artifact raised all lass 0 planets within 2 sectors of that world to class 12s.

At first, I hoped I would get a few new planets to play with.... I didn't quite realise how much territory 2 sectors truly encompass.

I ended up with roughly 20 planets affected merely within my own borders. There were dozens more inside the surrounding empires territories.

Of course, I panicked and started building colony ships as fast as I could build them. At least until I noticed that none of the other empires were doing the same. I quit the game a few turns after the event so I don't know if they were all just casually buiding them or not. I realised I REALLY didn't want all those extra planets as I was perfectly happy with what I had. To get such a large amount of planets would have destroyed the game at that point.

Perhaps this event could stand a little nerfing, 2 sectors is a huge area on all but the two largest map sizes. As for me, I'll be loading up an earlier save game and hoping that this event doesn't come about again.

I love random events

Random events ARE awesome, but that's a vast area to cover, as neat as it is. Perhaps it could be scaled, based on X parsecs per map size? Actually, I was thinking, it might be nice to be able to disable/enable random events, because sometimes you just don't want something to happen. Specifically I'm thinking of... dang, what's it called? Ultradrive or something? The thing which increases your movement? I hate that one, because I love the whole "Space is big" thing xD

'Course, I reckon it'd be a cinch to mod the thing out... *Goes to check this* Hmm, actually, I can't seem to find those particular events anywhere. Anyone know anything?

It wouldn't be that big of an issue of the AI was taking advantage of that kind of event as aggressively as you were. Toning the event down wouldn't be necessary.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but these overpowered random events are lame. Like the virtually indestructable Precursor Ranger ship, it just totally ruins what was a good game. Nothing like having hours invested in a game and then having it completely change on you due to some ubar-powered random event.

They *really* need to have a toggle for these things so that those of us who want to play without them can.

Funnily enough, I have had that one happen in my current game, although it was to only class 5s. This happened in the opposite section of the map from me (i have about half now on a gigantic map), in the middle of terran space. However, I noticed a strange bit of behavior.

The terrans did nothing.

The arceans came halfway across the map and colonized almost every single one of them after 20 or so turns. Terrans did not get planet one, did not even build a single colony ship. Neither did the torians, drath, or altarans. I could not help wondering why they did nothing. Why was only the arcean empire in colonizing mode? only the torians and altarans were at war, so there should have been a colony rush like slamon at spawning time.

I love this event, but maybe an evaluation of how the AIs deal with it would be in order?

I never seen a slamon at spawning time, but it doesn't sound like it belongs on a family rated forum
Sorry couldn't resist.
I had that happen but didn't pay attention to the 2 sector thing, the next thing I know is an Arcean colony ship arrives at a planet right by my homeworld.Doooh!

I love the random events. As for the precurser ships? If I'm at war, they sit in orbit in one of my border worlds. If I'm at peace, I decommission them. They're not fast enough for me, all but my earliest attack ships have to have a minimum movement rating of 4-5.

My main problem with this particular event was that it brought such a drastic and game changing event to such a vast area.

There was also the fact that there was no competition for these new planets.
