How do you choose an alignment?

I have played through the entire campaign, and I could not figure out how to choose an alignment (to gain the alignment bonuses.) Could someone explain to me how to do this?

Just research "Xeno Ethics" on the tech tree. Once you've gained the tech, you'll get a prompt to choose your alignment. You then can research "Good and Evil" to start opening up the alignment-based colony buildings and whatnot.

Well I haven't exactly chose an alignment yet while playing GalCivII but having played the first one a lot I know how the system works. Probably the most important factor in determining your civ's alignment is the choices you make when you are faced with one of the random "ethical" decisions, for example when colonizing planet "X" you encounter aliens there and the machine gives you three choices for dealing with them. One choice is good, one neutral, and one evil. If you choose the good choice your civ will start "leaning" towards good. If you take the evil solution your civ will start leaning evil. After you do enough good, neutral, or evil things your civ's alignment will change.

yup poker but there are bonuses you get when you research Xeno ethis and you CHOOSE an alignment. Those choices you refer to help make it cheaper or more expensive to choose your alignment. Plus you get goodies when you choose an alignment.

Look at the yellow techs near the top of the tech tree, it should be an early tech at level 2 or 3. Just make sure that you have made enough decisions towards the alignment you want to have, the prices are pretty high and you can not delay the choice once you've researched the tech.

If I remember correctly, it's a very short path, It's at the third level under Xeno Entertainment, so it can come very early in the game if you want it to.

Be aware however, that once you research Xeno Ethics, you don't get any more colonization events, so if you're still colonizing and hoping for a good starship/research/PQ bonus, don't research it yet.
